PANIC ON THE STREETS

My friend Rob, who happens to be one of the most wonderful people put on this earth that I know, is going to Dublin over the next two weeks. He's looking for stuff to do and so I'm wondering if anyone who reads this blog might be able to help him out, and if so, please share with the rest of the class by posting it in the comments section. Thank you.

Rob writes: "Any tips you have about your favorite cool places, clubs, bands, food, drink, ways of getting round town, etc. would do me a world of good. Thank you, and may all your sons be bishops.

Morrissey said there was panic in the streets there, but he said the same thing about Dundee and Humberside. The man Can't be trusted!"

Lillie's Bordello isn't that cool, its too expensive. Try Coyote, Q, or Renards. Stay away from Temple Bar, its mostly tourists and is overpriced. Find some good local spots around Trinity or Grafton Street for a pint. Whelan's and The Porterhouse are good bars with some good tunes. Definitely hit up the Porterhouse and get a "Brainblata," a solid 8% alcohol beer. Finally, deinitely go to the Guinness storehouse, its awesome. Hope this helps.

make sure you have some shoes other than tennis shoes. It seems like a duh statement, but I had trouble getting into pubs with "trainers" on.

check out o'neill's pub around trinity/ suffolk street. it's nice and more of a traditional feel. lillie's bordello is not so great. http://www.oneillsbar.com/pics.htm

also check out Kilmainham Gaol

i dug the chester beatty museum/ library at dublin castle, take the dart outside the city/ sandycove or dun laoghaire to escape the city. enough rambling... have a great time.

the transport system is pretty good. the DART is the train system - basically takes you all around the coast. the buses (Dublin Bus) are a bit confusing. each bus route has different stops and finding the stop for your route can be a pain. basically, to get in and out of the City Centre (Trinity/Grafton/Temple Bar/etc) take the DART to Pearse or Tara station. cheapest way is to get a DART pass (unlimited rides) to last for two weeks.

SuperMac, not far from the river near the temple bar area is open super late night and is like McDonalds\Pizza Hut\ Taco Bell\ Baskin Robbins. Its one of the best places to eat yourself sick when you're wasted!

Go to Mulligan's pub on Poolbeg Street. The real deal. As in, I met Shane McGowan there. The Long Hall is a good pub, too. There's a trendy restaurant called Eden that feels like you're eating in the Helsinki airport somehow. Sheridan's Cheese Shop for delicious Cashel Blue cheese and picnic sandwiches. The IRA bookshop on the north side of the Liffey by the Dublin Writer's Museum. Wish I could go...
