PASS ME THE PEAS AND EMOTION

Despite what some people say, I'm not emo. Sure, I sometimes say shit like "you're a sandcastle i want to destroy" (the more agressive version is: "you're a Jonathan Antin haircut I want to pull and cum on") for no reason whatsoever, but that doesn't make me emo. It makes me destructive. Not self-destructive, which is the saving grace keeping me from being emo.

Anyway, I'm going through some unnamed songs on my iTunes and naming them before brunch and I came across one of my favorite songs of all time: "Tears of a Clown" by Smokey Robinson. Listening to it again, I realized that it's the first SUPER-EMO ballad ever. Black people didn't only create rock'n'roll, they also created Emo. Who knew?

Check out this gem:

Tears Of A Clown

Lyrics: Smokey Robinson
Music: Stevie Wonder, Hank Cosby

Now if there's a smile on my face
It's only there trying to fool the public
But when it comes down to fooling you
Now honey that's quite a different subject
But don't let my glad expression
Give you the wrong impression
'Cause really I'm sad, oh I'm sadder than sad
Well I'm hurt and I want you so bad
Like a clown I appear to be glad, ooh yeah

Chorus
Well they're some sad things known to man
But ain't too much sadder than
The tears of a clown when there's no one around
The tears of a clown when there's no one around

Now if I appear to be carefree
It's only to camouflage my sadness
And honey to shield my pride I try
To cover this hurt with a show of gladness
But don't let my show convince you
That I've been happy since you
Decided to go, oh I need you so
Look I'm hurt and I want you to know
For others I put on a show

[chorus]

Just like Pagliacci did
I try to keep my surface hid
Smiling in the crowd I try
But in a lonely room I cry
The tears of a clown
When there's noone around

Now if there's a smile on my face
Don't let my glad expression
Give you the wrong impression
Don't let this smile I wear
Make you think that I don't care
Cos really I'm sad

THIS IS A STOLEN TRANSMISSION MISSION

Lastnight I had a sleepover after the Stolen Transmission Orchard Bar party. It was just me, BrandonR, Karen, Leigh, and Sean Dack Attack. We piled in here at around 4:30am and managed to only get through half an episode of "Curb Your Enthusiasm" before Brandon had his head on a pillow on my lap, Karen had her head on a pillow on Brandon's hips, Leigh was passed out behind a door, Sean was semi awake and smoking a cigarette next to Leigh, and I was passed on on the coner of my couch. By the time morning rolled in, my roommate Brian was already about to leave the house for Korea.

We amazingly were not completely useless the whole day. After picking up food at Teany (which we ate back at mine), and watching more brain-numbing TV, Leigh declared that she wanted to help me out by making some Nightmare of You singles (i think she was inspired by me saying "holy shit! 20 more singles sold overnight... this is gonna take forever to make!).

Now, the NOY singles are incredibly intricate to make. They're covered in real-life rose petals that are either applied while the flowers are still fresh or dried. Last night I picked up 10 dozen roses, plucked them all, and put them in a tub. There was no way i could wait for them all to dry. Leigh's interest in arts&crafts couldn't have been better matched.

Here is Leigh making some of the singles:

This is Karen and Brandon watching TV:

This is Sean watching something on TV over Leigh's head:

Then I delegated some help from Brandon, so this is him making the cover cards:

This is a closeup of Brandon writing them up:

After a few hours of doing this (and finally completing 25 cd artworks), Josh came over to hang out and bring me a super awesome necklace that he bought me. Everyone finally decided to go home so they could shower and Josh decided to take a nap on my couch.

This is Josh waking up from a nap:

This is the mess that making the single (and getting into rose petal fights) causes:

I'M SENDING YOU THIS POST

Holy shit. i just compiled the numbes... i dont want to share them all, because i dont have the spinto band here with me to give permission... but brandon from nightmare of you is over and he said it's ok for me to say how much they sold... 199 copies in 4 days! holy shit. we're almost on the second pressing in only a couple days! it took me 4 weeks (if not more) to sell that many louis xiv singles. WOWZERS. Thanks Absolutepunk.net!

These photos were just taken right now...

Here is Brandon and Jordan celebrating Jordan's birthday and the face brandon is giving me is to convince me to not take down the link for the ep sales:

This is what the NOY single looks like... it's sitting on top of a bed of roses.

This is Jordan's girlfriend Feng-Feng (Fun-Fun), and Jordan's roommate Obediah:

This is Karen

And just for fun, this is a photo that Brian took of Jordan spoon feeding Brandon some cereal:
LIKE, TONIGHT

Wow. Last night I was sitting on my couch with Jordana the intern when I opened up my PayPal account and saw the number of CD sales for the Spinto Band and Nightmare of You. I started shivering and lost my breath. I called Brian into the room and told him my sales. He couldn't believe it. Thanks to everyone who ordered. I'm truly honored that you would order them. I will also become truly broke since they're all so expensive to produce, but TOTALLY worth the time.

Anyway, here's the tarts fun for tonight;

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JORDAN SILVER

Today is Jordan's 22nd birthday. He's almost getting too old for me to date, but I love him anyway.

DON'T LET THEM KNOW YOU'RE A FAN

Karen and I were depleting our brain cells last night at her house before going over to Greg.K's for LoveLeigh's birthday when we sat down for a frank discussion. The topic? Nightmare of You. We are simply shocked by how much we love this album. Truly, shocked. We haven't felt this strongly about a new band since the Killers, and it feels great. We sat there quoting lyrics to each other, cooing over how wonderful the album is, wondering how long it'll be before others pick up on it and embrace it. I hope it's soon.

On another note, I'm not the biggest OK Go fan, but their new video is Hilarious.

HORAY FOR BUBBLERS!

Rob Hitt sent me this great Secret Lives of Free Masons video. They poke good fun at emo vids all across the land.
OH MANDY AND NOY... SO DREAMY

OK music nerds and rock DJs... the time is now, act wisely:

Depending on the browser you're using, the new singles by Nightmare of You and the Spinto band are on sale. The "buy now" buttons should either be on the right side of this page or the bottom of this page. Enjoy!

The Nightmare of You single:
Featuring the songs: "My Name is Trouble," "You Don't Have to Tell Me I Was a Terrible Man," and "Dopesick Couples on the Lower East Side"

The Spinto Band single:
Featuring the songs: "Oh Mandy," "Misogyny is Cool," and "Karen + Mandy ("Oh Mandy" remix by Mark Eklund and Ollie Tamale of the Oohlas)"

Buy both for the delightfully low price of $7
I'M YOUR BIGGEST FAN

Holy shit, is the Nightmare of You album good. Karen and I finally admitted to each other that we feel the same way about this one as we felt about the Killers album, and, well, you know what happened there.

I'm putting their single, and the Spinto Band's single, on sale today. in a few minutes. I've been getting an overwhelming amount of emails from NOY fans asking for their single... it's coming!

Gesus, NOY is just so good it's really silly. Really, really, really silly.

And in other awesome Stolen Transmission news... check out what the LA Alternative Press said about The Oohlas:

The OOHLAS
For two years, the Oohlas have been layering Kim Deal vocals and Pixie-like haze over music that swims from the purest jangle pop over to downtrodden psych rock. The trio (composed of Ollie Tamale and Mark and Greg Eklund) offers music that embodies solitary moments like an empty city street at dawn — calm but full of latent possibility. New York City blogger Sarah Lewitinn (AKA Ultragrrrl) picked up the Oohlas on her singles label, Stolen Transmission, selling the 3-song EP on her site so quickly she could barely keep up with demand. Sure, it’s just the internet, but keep in mind Stolen Transmission counts Louis XIV among its alums. But being short on hometown devotion hasn’t daunted the insistent Oohlas. With a couple of write ups in the British bastion of undiscovered, New Music Express (NME), and radio play across Europe, the Oohlas sound the big-in-U.K. cliché as well and loudly as any fish ‘n’ chip munching Brit. Fortunately, the Oohlas have yet to head off into the European sunset yet, giving those stateside a chance to fix the transatlantic imbalance. Catch their full-of-frivolity live show July 29 at The Echo, where you’ll be transfixed by their serene and sparkling rock. (Catherine Addock)

I LOVE YOU

Ollie and Bug:

GET THE FUCK OOOT

Can we please discuss something totally important: Degrassi High.

Tonight's episode was called Love Will Tear Us Apart.

Karen turned me onto this show when the new season started and I have been obsessed with it ever since. Not only this show, but also Instant Star. How do these Canadians make such great teenaged shows?

Friday Nights? They Go There.

I’M JUST A CROSS HAIR

Now Playing:
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - In This Home on Ice
The Editors - Blood (thanks Adi for that one!)

How is it possible that I totally forget nearly everything in my life these days (don’t answer that Karen or Rob)? Not just appointments but spans of time. The other day someone asked me if I had fun on Monday night. What the fuck was Monday night? I still don’t remember but I think it had something to do with me hanging out with BrandonR on my couch and talking about how cool shit can be. I believe Karen was involved in this, as was Jordan since he’s usually at my house (or waiting at my doorstep, or sitting on my couch) everyday by 7pm.

I just had to IM Karen, aka the working side of my brain, to remind me:
Ultragrrrl: what did we do on monday night?
Ultragrrrl: is that when jordan and feng-feng and brandon came oveR?
KarenPlusOne: hahahaha
KarenPlusOne: um
KarenPlusOne: yes
KarenPlusOne: i came over after the vaux show
KarenPlusOne: you vacuumed
KarenPlusOne: allegedly
Ultragrrrl: I DID.
Ultragrrrl: did you not notice?
Ultragrrrl: and then what?
KarenPlusOne: i went home
Ultragrrrl: didnt i go somewhere?
KarenPlusOne: yeah, was that the boat night?
Ultragrrrl: OH RIGHT. the frying pan.
KarenPlusOne: yes
KarenPlusOne: (as in , yes!)
Ultragrrrl: I went there with brian. we didnt stay long cause it was hot.

So that might explain things. Brandon came over so we could go together to the Vaux (they’re emormous) show at Mercury Lounge. I had taken a Ritalin that day (it is a street drug after all… maybe Tom Cruise isn’t too crazy) and found myself cleaning my house like a little elf (kill your elf). I kept on shuffling Brando all over the place as I sorted shit out and Mr. Cleaned the surfaces. When I dragged my vacuum out of the closet I noticed it was acting weird so I turned it upside down and proceeded to attempt to fix it only to discover that a piece had been broken and unfixable. But while I tried to fix it, we ended up missing Vaux, which Karen informs me was a big miss. Bummer.

So everyone came over and we watched TV and tried out the new Blowout game that Jordan invented (which might explain why I can’t remember Monday).

Brian, Meredith, and I headed over to the Frying Pan for the Vice party that The Living Things were performing at with Har Mar Superstar. There was lots of awesome rock and a bunch of cute boys to touch and kiss, but I was in a humid daze and could hardly function. Sean Dak Attack ushered my lost body around the boat and eventually I ushered my body home.

Tuesday night I went to the “Last Days” premier and already wrote about that. It was sexy.

Wednesday night I went to see Vintz’s band Army of Me at the pier with Karen, Brandon and Josh. We danced and waited in line for autographs and got used to the smell of dying fish quickly. I bid the homies farewell and went to Brooklyn to reunite the Ex-Lovers… my DJ coupling with Miss ModernAge. I had been up til the wee hours the night before and had to wake up early that morning for a meeting at work so I found myself literally falling asleep in the DJ booth whenever I wasn’t DJing. MsMod looked gorgeous by the way. Fucking beautiful like a little Chinese angel I want to miniaturize and keep in my pocket.

We were in BK to DJ the Vicious 2nd Anniversary. Audrey and Jasper have done such an amazing job of putting on some amazing shows for the past two years, and this show was easily the best yet. Pretty much everyone is a buzz about Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, and appropriately so. Everyone is comparing them to the Talking Heads and Arcade Fire, but I also hear a bit of the Longpigs in them. There’s a dreaminess to them that will make you float to somewhere prettier than where you are now – even if it’s the prettiest place you’ve ever been or the floor of a DJ booth as you try to gain consciousness. After the show I started chatting with this guy that I thought was cute. I asked him if he liked CYHSY and he looked at me funny, then giggled sweetly and said “Well, yeah, I’m in the band.” I felt foolish but he was so sweet and totally understanding when I told him that I couldn’t see the faces… just figures… from way back where I was.

After CYHSY came the impossibly gorgeous Saints+Lovers. I wish they performed earlier in the night because by the time they came on stage everyone was exhausted, but the people that did stay and brave it out, witnessed, as always, a truly remarkable performance by the band. I will never get over their cover of Joy Division’s “Atmosphere” (out soon on stolen transmission singles!). They might not know it now, but the people who had to go home early will be kicking their own asses in a little while when they realize what they missed.

OK, now for something truly hilarious:

So about 5 years ago I had a desk job just like most people and needed a way to waste away my day. My friend Travis turned me onto the message board on his website, Buddyhead, and I became addicted because the kids on there were really funny, clever, and had great taste in music. So I got to sit around and have decent discussions about bands that I liked, movies I just saw, and other stupid shit. A lot of really cool people from all over the world posted on that message board that I later became really good friends with in real life. Some of those people went on to become rockstars, some went on to become writers, some went on to be designers, some went on to have babies. Most of us have all stayed in touch and make plans to hang out whenever we can.

One of the people who posted on that msg board said she was recording artist Amanda Ghost. This didn’t really phase many people because a lot of other musicians used to post on the board and she seemed cool and also, nobody had heard of her. But like anyone else on the board we all became invested in her because she was a regular and really sweet and funny.

Some of us got excited when her songs appeared on the new apple computers. Some of us bought her CD to show support. When she appeared on Jimmy Kimmel on Tuesday, the following day, a few of us were stoked because one of our old ‘nerd buddies had done something cool and exciting.

A couple of my friends that I know from that board were in town visiting yesterday when I got an email from someone asking me to check out the Amanda Ghost show that night at Scenic. The three of us got super excited and thought we’d surprise her at her show. So we got there early and I knocked on her dressing room door.
“Hi, is Amanda in there?”
“Yeah, who is this?”
“My friends and I are friendly with her and just wanted to say hi.”

Amanda jumped from her couch and looked at me familiarly.
“Hey! I’m Sarah Lewitinn! I know you!”
“Really? How?”
“I can’t say it outloud. Can I whisper it in your ear?”
”Why?”
“Please? I’m embarrassed!”
“OK.”
”I know you from the buddyhead message board from a few years back,” I pointed to the two boys behind me “This is XXXX and XXXX from the board!”
“Oh, hi!”
“Uh… do you remember us?”
”No, What are you talking about?”
“The buddyhead message board… you know… on the internet? We used to email and IM all the time. Your email address was Amanda@amandaghost.com.”
“Oh my god! I kid you not, but about a hundred people have come up to me saying they were email friends of mine and I had never heard of them before. I think warner brothers did some marketing thing and had people post as me on message boards. I don’t know why they did that! I didn’t even own amandaghost.com until recently, it was some super fan named xxxxxx.”
“No fucking way.”
“Yeah, seriously.”
“Oh. My. God. I feel like an idiot.”
”It’s ok! You’re not the only one who has done that!”

It’s ok. We were humiliated a little, but then we went to see Elkland at the Paper Magazine party and Baron was so inspired by their truly over the top gayformance that we hurried home with Ellen, Greg the BF, and Robbie and watched Baron hoolahoop naked in my bedroom. I wish I was kidding. He spent about 10-20 minutes stark naked in my room hoolahooping.

HAHAHAHAHAHA

i've been laughing about this every couple of minutes out of no where.
VIOLINS ARE SO HOT RIGHT NOW

Karen's been spinning Patrick Wolf's "Tristan" a lot lately, and I've been fucking loving it so much. Everytime we DJ this at least ONE person comes to us and asks about the song so I figured I'd share it with you all so you can DJ it out or put it on mix CDs/Playlists or drive around in your car while blasting it.

Download Patrick Wolf's "Tristan"

Let me know what you think and if this (posting mp3s) is something you'd like to see more of on this blog cause I'd like to do it more but I don't know if anyone wants it.

Totally unrelated, but it's been a while since I've had cute animal photos up.

I showed this photo to Nightmare of Brandon R and said "I think this is what I would look like if I were a dog." He didn't hesitate to agree. This upset me slightly, but mostly because it's true. Either way, I want a fucking muppet dog like this so badly.

FINAL-FUCKING-LY

Karen finally updated her blog.

that's all, thank you.
TELL ME WHERE DID YOU SLEEP LAST NIGHT

Last night my friend took me to the premier of Last Days, which actually turned out to be a proper premier with a red carpet and everything. Michael Pitt and Lukas Haas were there as were Thurston and Kim Gordon. All these people showed up to the movie's after party at Pianos and Michael Pitt even wore a shirt that appeared to be from the film's wardrobe. He was polite when we were introduced and looked delightfully homeless and I caught him making out with his gorgeous girlfriend outside while smoking a cigarette. He looked happy. He looked opposite of what he was in the movie. That's called acting, people.

The movie was great and only about an hour and a half long, which was LONG ENOUGH cause it was totally depressing with very little dialog. Michael Pitt played Kurt (or rather, a character based entirely on Kurt named Blake in the movie) incredibly well, but you sort of don't really get a total sense of "ok, this person is really fucking depressed and he's going to kill himself." instead, it all seems sort of premeditated on Kurt's behalf. Like, as if he was totally strung out and high, but fully aware of what he was going to do for a few days. Planning it out and not wanting to get caught and have his plan foiled. Even when Kim Gordon attempts to save Kurt, delivering a speech to him that seems like something she's been dying to tell him for the past 11 years (if she didn't when she had the shot), he's unresponsive and doesn't listen to her.

Featured in the movie was Michael Pitt’s original work, which I must say is quite impressive. I’m not sure if he was given the task of creating a song that was as Kurt-like as he could possibly get it, or if the song he painfully played towards the end of the film was something he had previously written, but either way, it was sang exactly like you would imagine Kurt to sing it. Sadness, longing, more sadness, more longing. I never wanted the song to end and I actually plan on seeing Pitt’s band Pagoda next time they play as a result.

All the shots in this movie are like gorgeous photographs lined up to create a movie, there wasn't one camera angle or set up that I didn't find totally captivating. I also really enjoyed Gus Van Sant's method of recapturing different angles of a moment in time. For instance, capturing what's going on from Kurt's point of view and then recapturing that moment almost exactly but from someone else's POV. The first time he did this I thought it would grow tiresome, but alas, the movie was short enough to prevent this.

The scene where Kurt's body is discovered by the gardener was chilling. GVS masterfully captured the image that we all remember of Kurt's body in the greenhouse. The way his shoes were positioned, the way the french doors covered parts of his body, everything. It was almost as if you were there reliving the whole thing all over again, and it made me feel slightly uncomfortable, but at the same time, I felt a sense of closure that I can't really explain. Here I was watching a movie about the last perceived days of a person's life who meant the world to me when I was a young teen, and the whole thing is still as much of an enigma as it was 11 years ago, but at least I feel like I got to see it with my own eyes, even if that’s totally not true.

THE VIDEO

click here to see that video i'm talking about.
SING TO ME IN FRENCH

Are you fucking kidding me with this Maximo Park video for "Graffiti"? Chances are the director of this video will never see this (but the director of the interpol video with the puppet did, so who knows)... but incase he/she does... THANK YOU FOR FOCUSING ON THE KEYBOARDIST! The rest of the members are fantastic as well, but there's an undeniable magnetism to the keyboard player. He's totally sexy. He looks like a mixture of Brett from Suede and Alex from Franz Ferdinand, and hs this sickly gorgeous look about him throughout... even when he's doing potentially ridiculous thins. I've watched this video about 30 times in a row just now (or so it feels like) and i can't stop staring at the boy -- and the song is one of my favorites from the album with it's joy division bridge. So good. I think part of the reason i can't keep my eyes off the keyboard player has something to do with when Karen and I djed their after party and he and a female friend took over the floor and were the most adorable dancers I'd ever seen. I nearly started crying watching them dance around, not caring about anyone else at the club who might see them and laugh at their moves. The two were staring so happily at each other, spinning around, and looking like young lust. at one point the girl lifted the boy up into the air and spun him around as he bent over and kissed her. it was the sweetest and most adorable thing I'd ever seen -- almost as if out of the part of the movie when the two characters realize that they're in love and embrace for the first time -- and i never wanted it to end.

WAIT, WHAT'S YOUR NAME AGAIN?

I've had these boys in my life lately that have been spending nearly every waking hour of their lives in my apartment, sitting on my couch, sleeping on my floor, eating the last of my roommates' food. They come out with me everywhere, they make me laugh, they make me smile, they make sure I look cute when I leave the house and they make sure that we tivo all the best shows.

This situation has been going on for about a month, if not more, and I amazingly don't have a name for these boys. My harem? The Boyfriends II? The Boytoys? Boytoy Jordan? Boytoy Brandon? Boytoy Josh? Boytoy Brian? Boytoy Geordan? Boytoy Ryan? I can't figure it out. I also have girls over ... would they be Boytoy Karen? Boytoy Leigh? Boytoy Ellen? Do I have a pussy posse?

Anyway, Jordan and I were watching the Harem's new favorite show, Blowout, when he came up with the genius idea for a drinking game:
Everytime Johnathan says his name: Johnathan, you have to take a shot.

AND THE DEVIL IS SIX

I started a new job the other week (in addition to my label and book... something about idle hands and the devil or something... must stay busy) and have been listening to the free radio broadcast that XFM.co.uk offers up. It's so good. Right now i'm listening to the Pixies and earlier there was a Muse song and before then was Nivana... it's the best radio station that Karen has ever turned me on to.

Check out photos from fashion shows during Paris' Fashion Week.

I'm ashamed of my score of 75% on this quiz of who's a jew.

Also, the Tarts of Plezza are DJing on monday at a super club called NA in the city. We really want to bring a big crowd down there cause there's an OPEN BAR from 10-11pm. So if you, or anyone you know, wants to come down, please email me so i can make sure you're all sorted: sarahlewitinn@gmail.com

2. Does anyone have the video for My Chemical Romance's "Ghost of You"? Mikey Way told me that it finally leaked but i can't find it online anywhere. Please email it to: sarahlewitinn@gmail.com or IM me at Ultragrrrl.

ANOTHER SONG ABOUT TONY?!

I loved all the singles from Gwen Stefani's album... save for the song "Cool" until I saw the video for it which featured quite possibly the hottest dude I've ever seen in my life. I'm trying to find out his name and a photo. There's something in the video for everyone... Gwen went brunette to portray her younger self and looks amazing. She actually looks about 10-15 years younger as a brunette. But fuck it, check out the video for the dude. He is stunning.

The oohlas play at 8ish and directly after their set, Ollie from the oohlas will be performing a set of covers with Travis from Piebald. should be fun!
