BREWING ALTERNATIVES or.... SPARE US THE (COOKIE)CUTTER

Songs To Learn And Sing by Echo & the Bunnymen -- A collection of singles -- is by far one of the greatest things to own if you're getting into the band or want to. Oh god, I could listen to "The Cutter" and "Doing it Clean" on repeat for the rest of my life.

Well, it seems like some bands recently purchased this record, or at least the artwork of it.

Here's the Bunnymen version:

Sirens Sister version:

Linkin Park's version:

I was gonna give that linkin park record a listen since i actually thought the first one was good. not too into the second one... but when i saw the cover, i decided to listen to echo and the bunnymen instead. i'm stoked as fuck.
OH SO PRETTY RICKY

When my friend Nick from MW&C sent this to me, I honestly thought it was gonna be about his bandmate Ricky. This is so much better that that could've ever been:

RUNNING UP THAT HILL

Today someone from MySpace came to say hello. I told this guy about some glitch that I found out about with Myspazz... turns out he didnt know about it and had me email his associates to explain it. One of them was Tom from MySpace! That was overwhelmingly exciting for me... I'm such a nerd.

Over Passover, I caught a program on PBS's NOVA called "Kings of Camouflage" which was about Cuttlefish... one of the most fascinating sea creatures (or any creature) I've ever seen. Since then, i've become obsessed with trying to find out more about the weird fish, which is more along the lines of a mullosk and kind of looks like a squid meets a happy dog.

Their color and shape changes instantly, and can flash like a television set. They're also very intelligent and have a memory.

You have to check it out. It's unbelievable.

PLEASE CHECK OUT THE NEW SIGNINGS IN THE BLOG POST BELOW THIS ONE

Now that all of the hullabaloo has died down, I think it's time for me to get something off my chest:
I blog while drunk.

It happens. Alcohol is a depressant, and after spending 2 days in the scortching hot sun (which was preceeded by a few days in the crazy new york streets where I went missing for a while after falling asleep in a DJ booth), I think stuff just started to get to me.

Have you ever had so much chocolate that you never wanted chocolate ever again? But then a few hours pass and you're like "you know, i dont HATE chocolate, i just had a chocolate overload and I needed a break."

That being said, i dont hate any genre of music or their fans. I really don't.

I think i was also upset because some bitch wrote on some blog's comments that i slept with a married friend of mine IN THE BACK ROOM OF MISSHAPES OF ALL PLACES -- she "heard from a friend of a friend and ohmygod how does his wife not know?!" -- type of bullshit. and god, that enraged me for a million reasons. in the back room of the old misshapes this is what happened: you got drink tickets, your photo taken, and if you needed to, there was a hair iron on duty incase you had an emergency hair straigtening.

What's ironic is that on the date in question, i was on a date with the dude's best friend. I get so angry at shit like this. SO ANGRY. So i guess that anger got the best of me and made me declare a fatwah on emo for no reason. I mean, i really do think that a lot of those bands and fans would benefit from checking out different music. but indie rock can be just as derivative and same sounding and at least the kids at the emo shows are excited about being there, which is what drew me to it in the first place.
UNCALCULATED CALCULATION

Now that I have your attention, I'd like to announce a couple new members to the Stolen Transmission family:

We here at Stolen Transmission are very excited to announce two new bands to the family:

Last Tuesday, Innerpartysystem signed to us... in blood. I'm not kidding you. Please click on their name and go to their website to view their signing video, where you will see them signing in blood. The music in the background is theirs (apart from the musak in the elevator). Innerpartysystem will be performing on Wednesday night at Fat Baby at 9:30pm.

On Thursday evening, Schoolyard Heroes signed to us... over red red wine. We have been fans of the band for two years, so it was nice to finally have them come into the fold. The band will be joining the Horrors on their first headlining North American Tour! Here is their signing video:

EYE HATE PEOPLE

So i dont know if this comes from emo-overload, or what, but i fucking hate people. Or maybe it has something to do with horrible rumors i read on gossip sites with people saying i fucked some dude that i've never even touched beyond a hug. i'm outraged. i hate people.

emo is dead.

it was DOA. i tried so fucking hard to understand it. it's not understandable. even the people in the bands that are considered emo hate emo, and i dont blame them. just like nu-metal and fred durst, this shit is ready for its grave.

btw, i dont place mcr in this category because mcr is just straight up rock.

no wonder music sales are so low, so many young kids are buying shitty music or just showing up to shows because it's the cool thing to do... they're not even listening to this shit. There's really great stuff out there that they just dont consider cool enough to like because their peers aren't embracing it.

maybe this post has something to do with me being drunk at the moment. maybe all the posts i've made within the past 30 minutes on various sites has something to do with how much i've drank, but oh my god, teenagers have the worst taste in music.

HAVE ANY OF YOU HEARD OF A BAND CALLED THE PIXIES?!?!?1

music did not start in 2002. do you know that? knowing your musical history doesnt start with knowing what the first glassjaw record was.

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, PLEASE LISTEN TO THE SMITHS. listen to joy division. listen to the clash. LISTEN TO THE BEATLES!!!!! listen to bob marley. listen to neil diamond. listen to the beach boys. LISTEN TO SOMETHING OTHER THAN WHAT YOU'RE LISTENING TO.

NO DOUCHE

And i wrote this to the bar owners, excited about our arrival:

FUCK YES! We're so excited to have the stolen transmission party at AK47. So many people have been hitting me up about it, excited for it's return, so thank you for the opportunity and i hope that you all can make it and enjoy the best downtown party new york city has to offer... and have tons of sex in the bathroom, as per petey's instructions.

We were hoping to start the party at about 11pm. Nick Snow, from ST, will be DJing for an hour or two, and then Karen and I will get on the decks until 4am.

Here's a flyer:

And another that my friend Lisa made:

And here are some photos of the party when it was at the orchard bar and the best shit ever (until tomorrow, of course):

So, are you gay?

Guess what, MySpace doesn't feel like acknowledging you. You can be Bi, Lesbian, Straight, Not Sure, No Answer... BUT NOT GAY.

GAyndrew from The Hot Lisp, brought this to my attention today.

Unfuckingreal.

Virb... i'm coming. Who is coming with me?

RETRACTION!
Turns out myspace had a glitch in the system. A bug. A bug that hated gays, but it will be fixed. Also, some people told me that Tom's gay. Next thing you know, i'm gonna find out that he's a jew.

SOUR TIMES

My favorite mini-jew Matt moved in with my favorite Jewess KarenPlusOne today, and I was delighted to find out that I've become their refrigerator mezuzah.

Yes, that is me, in the little photo -- taken circa 1988 when I was 8 years old.

I'm still the same height.
UNLEASH THE BATS

We're very excited to announce the pre-order for the Horrors debut full length album, Strange House!

In addition to the album, everyone who pre-orders the album will also get a t-shirt designed by Faris Rotter of the Horrors.

ps. anyone wanna hear an incredible cover of "she's in parties" i have? aim me: ultragrrrl and i'll send it over.

GET READY FOR IT...

Interpol - The Heinrich Maneuver (NEW INTERPOL!!!)

Ok, if any of you people have this song already -- fuck you for not sending it to me immediately.

I tried to find everyone in my address book that might be interested in this track (though, i probably left out a bunch of people since i'm exhausted and havent slept in 24 hours, so i'm also delirious) to send it to. it's fucking triumphant and fantastic. Paul's vocals are urgent and forceful while completely vulnerable. Daniel's guitars are exactly in line with what you'd expect from interpol... which is kinda comforting in a weird way.... in a fuck, bands really dont have to conform even when they get a bagillion dollar advance (which they deserve), kind of way. Oh man, i love the way that Paul sings "oh my god."

this is a song! with a chorus!

and this is me, after a possibly 2 year hiatus from this actually happening, finally having a litter of puppies fall out of my vagina once again. (for those of you who dont understand that reference, i'm really sorry, it was gross, but totally necessary). it feels great.

and this is carlos, no longer the dengler I once knew:

God, this band is everything right with music.

THANK YOU STEREOGUM for the link and photo, which i stole.

AND I JUST COULDNT TAKE IT ANYMORE!

I know I wrote about this a while ago ... well, i finally found footage of it:

Watch this live Horrors video for "Gloves".

Apart from being totally fucking awesome, dirty, and fucked, keep your eyes peeled for approx the 4 minute mark when Faris jumps into the crowd (or trips into the crowd)... he happens to totally wipe out me and Rob Stevenson ... though you can't see me since i'm short, but you can see Rob's silverfoxhead perfectly.

Here is my original description of the evening:

there's this thing about the horrors' song "gloves" that causes me and rob to sort of lose our shit. it's our time to get free primal scream therapy and scream in each others faces for no reason. we typically get so excited all set long for this song that we start spazzing out like half way into the whole shebang. so for like 20 minutes i found myself moshing with the people next to me that didnt want to mosh, then hurling myself to the front with the people who had no choice but to mosh, then falling to the floor, then grabbing hold on faris (the singer) when he came into the audience, then throwing a pinata's parts at faris when he got back on stage with Rob, then watching faris as he walked to the back of the audience where he grabbed a garbage can filled with bottles, cans, cups all filled with beer and tossed it onto the audience... then running to the front of the stage with rob so we could violently spin around and then get jumped on by faris from stage and land in a pile of garbage. Oh, and then JennyPenny and Casey threw a garbage can filled with trash back on the stage.

PSSSST

I used to read the old music secret community on livejournal pretty religiously with my friends and reluctant boyfriend. But then that got shut down because of too much spam or something. All those kids would write secrets about Pete Wentz saving their life and how much they love Cute is What We Aim for and the Academy Is... um... yeah. i dont know why i read it. It was just totally fascinating to me in the most masochistic way.

Anyway, there's now a NEW music secret. Here's the link. It's turned delightfully sarcastic and hilarious (i really hope it's sarcastic). Pass it on! the community is lacking submissions.

GIMME MAH BUCKET

My brother posted this in the comments below, and I thought i'd share it with everyone:

Our Aunt Jenny was treated at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick. It would be especially nice if people gave in her memory.

You can donate here.

Also, there are other ways musicians have helped or are helping for other causes. One is "Marc Across America". Marc Kantor from the band Patent Pending is cycling across America to raise money for The American Heart Association. You can learn more (and donate) here:

I AMS TEH LOLRUS

Karen and I got asked to start the Stolen Transmission party again -- so we pondered it for a moment. When we stopped pondering, we pondered some more: do we actually want to leave the house at night? do we actually want to socialize? do we want to make a fun party where our friends can go on a friday night even though i can't make out with any of them anymore now that i'm married?

the answer: YES.

And yes, we're having the party at Pete Wentz' new joint, AK47. He used to come to our old old party at orchard bar as did the rest of the people that are on his label, so i guess that's why we've been asked to come over there. Plus, Friday night is totally do-able for Karen and I -- as long as it's after i have Shabbat Dinner with my family in NJ... which it will be. Oh, and incase you like to play Russian Roulette with germs, we're gonna have a community Manishewitz bottle in the DJ booth for all to drink out of. Maybe we'll get those little shot glasses that they have at shul that you drink with cookies after saturday morning services. UM, AMAZING.

TIME WONT LET ME GO

I forgot that when i post things on myspace, it doesnt count as posting on my blog... whoops. The Oohlas are on tour with Men, Women, and Children... traveling from the westcoast to the east coast where they'll be playing at BAMBOOZLE... the same festival a little band i kinda LOVE called MUSE.

Check this poster thingy for dates:

I just came home from a whirlwind couple of weeks. I was in California for five days, where i visited San Francisco for the first time since I was 10. I love SF. Love it! I went to DJ Popscene cause the Photo Atlas were playing. Popscene is like a legally younger version of Misshapes but a bit more carefree and less fashion oriented. The kids all seemed to love the Photo Atlas, and I loved the kids. I will be back in June for the BFD, djing the Popscene pre-party.

When I got home from California, I got one of the worst emails a person could get -- it was from my brother telling me and my other brother to visit our sick aunt in the hospital asap. She'd been diagnosed with cancer a couple years ago, and it amazingly went into remission (she had intestinal cancer). A few weeks ago she started getting sick again, and the email from Lawrence was to let me and Albert know that her kidneys had failed and she was in the hospital on morphine to deal with the pain. I landed at 845pm, got the email, i couldnt call my family because my sidekick was fucking broken. I finally got through via a payphone and was told to go to the hospital the next day with Albert.

So I went the next day to New Brunswick to visit my aunt Jenny. She was unconscious for the most part, occasionally opening her eyes to look at my brother, or her daughter, or son. About 2 minutes after I saw her for the first time in a while, I ran out of the room to cry hysterically by the vending machines. She looked like half the person i knew. The person I knew had more life and energy than basically anyone else I'd ever met. She was louder than any person I'd ever met (save for my dad, maybe), and loved food more than any person I'd ever met. As she was lying there in bed, she gave some sort of movement/acknowledgment to a conversation about food that we were having. It was amazing, and I really thought that maybe she'd pull through.

I was in a state of shock when I left. I took the subway to the t-mobile store to buy a new sidekick -- figuring now was the time to get it... in case of an emergency. Unbelievably, the person selling me my phone forgot to put the battery (and th back of the phone) in the box because he got distracted by some dude that was looking (?!??!?!) at him. I didnt find out about this until I got home and opened the box to charge my phone. I guess the stress of the early afternoon started to add up in my mind and i just burst out in tears, hysterically crying in brandon's lap until i couldnt cry anymore. I knew what was happening to my aunt and i felt so sorry for my dad who was losing one of his best friends.

I couldnt leave the house all weekend, or do much else. I went to work on monday and tuesday, and could hardly focus. Finally, wednesday morning at 7:30am gurj came into my room saying my brother was on the phone (i accidentally left my phone in the livingroom), and i knew what was up. Two hours later I was at my aunt's funeral in brooklyn. It was almost a relief... or at least that's what I'm telling myself.

I had to leave for Florida the next morning for a mandatory A&R conference for Island/DefJam. Obviously I felt terrible for leaving my dad, and even worse knowing that I was somewhere that was very special for him and his sister. The whole time I was there, the food was amazing and never ending -- which made me sadder. All I could think about was how much my aunt Jenny would love the food.

I was having this amazing experience of traveling with people that I work with and love, and getting taken to town by Jay-Z of all people, but I couldnt bring myself to go out. I was so depressed about everything... which made me eat more and drink more and that just made the sadness worse. I even turned down an opportunity to go to Pawnshop to hang out with Muse. I turned down getting VIP treatment at whatever club I wanted because i was JayZ's posse... but i didnt turn down going to Nobu and eating the place clean. Food is something I will never turn down -- partying is something I might always turn down.

God, i didnt mean for this to be such a buzzkill.

The hotel was incredible and I'm so thankful for the opportunity to stay there and get things paid for.

But now i'm happy I'm home.

GOT YOU WHERE I WANT YOU

I finally gave the Pierce's album a shot after my friend kept on going on about how great it was... she mostly focused on the lyrics of "Boring" but never really gave me an idea of what they sounded like. To my delight, that song, as well as the rest of the album, is a psychedellic country record that sounds like the soundtrack to a 60's James Bond flick. It'd make Lee Hazlewood so proud.

I hade met Catherine Pierce at Black & White a year ago and instantly fell in love with her. First of all, she's probably one of the prettiest girls i've ever seen in person. Secondly, she instantly got my random obsure Anchorman reference. Lastly, she was hilarious. I was laughing the entire time I was next to her and wanted to be around her for the rest of the night just because she was hilarious.

I think later that night I wound up upstairs in WizKidManagement's office with possibly a stroke, i think chris martin?, conor orberst, jenny lewis, i think patrick matthews from youth group, or was it wyatt bozwell and brandon flowers. something random like that. fuck, i know someone was with me and could remember. maybe that was a dream i had. i totally forget. Oh, Ryan Heil was with me... but he would've been more drunk and definitely wouldnt remember.

Anyway, here's their video:

Last week i was in LA for work stuff and had a killer time at karaoke ... i'll write about that later today or tomorrow. right now i wanted to give all the attn to the pierces' video. you gotta check out their album, it's so fucking good. LOL at Jackson Pollis being in it. I LOVE HIM!

FUCK THE WORLD

A mutual friend of mine and Nick Snow's posted this somewhere:

"so jeremy piven got banned from the entire nobu chain for demanding a table for 12 and then leaving a DVD of the first season of Entourage as a tip, which was later thrown at him by the server.

has the line between actor and character ever been blurrier than with this guy? what an awesomely scumbag maneuver.
"

to which nick snow wrote:

"true story:

some friends of mine are in somewhat popular band and when they were in LA recording their cd, they went to a justin timberlake show and snuck into the VIP area. their guitar player introduced himself to jeremy piven and they made some small talk, then he started talking about the band. i guess piven stood there for about 30 seconds boredly nodding his head, then all of the sudden he literally grabbed the kids ear, pulled him towards him and whispered "i dont give a FUCK about your band, now get the fuck away from me" and pushed his head backwards and walked away.

i really would have been disappointed if jeremy piven HADN'T done that.
"

I love Jeremy Piven.

ALIVE WITH THE GLORY OF...

For the past year-ish, I've finally jumped on the Say Anything bandwagon. I'm not quite sure why it took so fucking long since I had read nothing but great reviews about their record ... is a real boy, but sometimes, it takes me a minute and i need to approach things at my own pace. I think the thing that converted me was the song "Alive with the Glory of Love" ... the lyrics were the most unbelievably sexy, romantic, and depressing lyrics about nazi concentration camps i've ever heard. Well, kind of the only lyrics about the camps that I've ever heard, so there was no competition, but that's not the point. No matter how depressing the topic is, I still found myself weirdly believing in love more than I did before listening to the song. There's something completely hopeful about the song that's almost comparable to the last few minutes of the movie "Life is Beautiful" but infinitely less depressing. You know in the movie when the father is trying to make his son laugh and not be scared as he's being carted away by the Nazi's, and you really can appreciate the lengths that love will go to make the other person feel better about things -- that song is sort of the musical equivalent of that (mostly because it's based on the same subject).

I thought of this, mostly because I just saw the video for "Wow, I Can Get Sexual Too" which is about love, and is not romantic in the least, but kind of funny. There's just something about Max's lyrics and vocal delivery that is just so great and makes me love the songs that I feel somewhat lukewarm about. I do really like the bridge of that song, and the video is so unfitting, it's hilarious.

I stayed away from downloading the internet copy of the Arcade Fire's Neon Bible (watch Arcade Fire videos here) because I wanted to hear the high quality version that the band intended fans to hear -- not the lowbitrate version that got passed around. I was on the subway listening to it when "intervention" came on -- was that the song they performed on SNL? I've gotta double check. Anyway, when "intervention" came on, I pressed my headphones close to my ears so i could hear the lyrics better and feel like i was surrounded by the music and not in a gross subway that feels like a coffin everytime i step into it.

i hate this song. i hate it because i love it so much and I cant listen to it without bursting into tears -- which is basically my relationship with the arcade fire. they make life more beautiful, and give it reason. its like gospel music without the God... it's hope and suffering all in one. I think that in 20 years, kids will still be discovering the Arcade Fire the same way they're discovering the Smiths and Joy Division today and be completely inspired and feel the same exact same way I am feeling this very second as I type this and listen to the song on repeat.

By the way, the Christina Aguilera video in which she plays three diff colored haired versions of herself is awesome. i'm not listening to the song cause i'm listening to the AF, but that video is fucking fantastic. I wonder what it sounds like.

I had dinner with my family last night to celebrate my Dad's 61st birthday. I was sooo nervous to see my dad cause I wasnt sure if he had seen the cover of the Village Voice yet or not. Coincidentally, my mom had only called me from her cell since it came out and i was convinced that it was cause my dad was really upset about the cover which displayed me in a slightly (although tastefully) provocative manner. But he had asked me to bring him 10 copies of the Voice for his birthday (how fucking cute, right?), because he was really proud and loved the article. It turns out that one of my uncles was less than pleased saying that I would embarrass the family if one of our Rabbi's saw it. I'm not sure how many of my family's rabbi's know me as "ultragrrrl" and would pass by the VV box and see "ultragrrrl" in huge letters and think "oh, there's is ondine and marc's daughter! what a ho!" Even my mom's nearly hasidic sister thought it looked great, which surprised the fuck out of me. I'm still nervous about Passover when I have to face my extended family and they give me the cold shoulder over the cover. But the important thing is that my parents are proud. I can live with that.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to live from the concussion i'm certain i have, which has left me with slightly fucked up depth perception and a backache that is going to have to demand medical attention as soon as possible. As if my memory wasn't bad enough before, it's kind of gone downhill. Thankfully, i think i got my love of emo knocked the fuck out of me since anytime i listen to an emo band demo i get disgusted and shut it off immediately. maybe it's just because they're all really bad demos.

By the way -- the best Chris Black quote from last night: "I love jewish girls -- they've got exaggerated features in various places."

ALL THE GIRLS OUT THERE ARE TOTALLY LYING WHEN THEY TELL YOU THAT SIZE DOES NOT MATTER... IT DOES

Here's a handy slideshow of some choice pictures from our time at SXSW... There's some Photo Atlas, some Horrors, some drunk ST employees, and some Young Love.

Unfortunately our photo dude Penta couldn't get down in time to get some shots of BLF, The Oohlas or Monty Are I.. so if you have any, send them to st.board@gmail.com and we'll throw them up!

Also, The Photo Atlas are up for voting on mtvU's The Freshmen for their video Handshake Heart Attack. Click here to vote for them and hopefully we'll see them on mtvU!

Checkit...repeated voting is allowed. Just sayin.

OUCH FUCK

First off, see any good boobs lately?

Secondly, I have the best fucking big brothers on earth. Two of them, infact, but Lawrence is like a "dont fuck with my family" kind of big brother. So good to me!

i'm back from south by south west (aka sxsw), and boy is my body aching me. let me explain something to you about sxsw -- it's basically a ton of people in the music industry, converging onto austin like ants to a pile of shit. in this case, the shit is replaced by free booze, bbq, and band... we're all still fucking ants though. little, creepy, crawling ants pissing in a port-a-potty and making out in a back alley.

so four days of waking up, drinking bloody marys that are free or paid for by someone else, seeing bands, drinking redbull, going to hear more loud bands, trying to talk over the loud bands, and attempting to find your hotel room at the end of the night.

previously when going to sxsw while at spin, i spent the entire time trying to find new bands and see whatever the buzzband of the moment was. well, this time at sxsw i spent the entire time seeing the bands on stolen transmission -- not because i had to, but because i wanted to and because that was the fucking place to be.

The Stolen Transmission showcase this year was the first ever ST SXSW party that not only featured our bands (Young Love took permanent me's spot as PM got some rest in Long Island), but also had a cash bar.... and it was PACKED! It was so packed that i had to beg and beg the door guy to let MC Nick Snow back in so he could finish MC'ing the event. After drunkenly begging, Rob came to the rescue or some shit. He tends to do that.

Every band played an amazing show -- whether it was bright light fever making new fans and opening the show up with a fucking killer set, or monty are i's steve totally fucking shredding to high hell on his guitar and stomping his way into guitargodlikeness, or young love making everyone dance their goth asses (i'm looking at you, joshua von grimm), or the photo atlas kinda stealing sxsw (vote for them on mtvu), or the oohlas turning into my own personal Nirvana for the millionth time this year, or the fucking horrors. oh the fucking horrors.

there's this thing about the horrors' song "gloves" that causes me and rob to sort of lose our shit. it's our time to get free primal scream therapy and scream in each others faces for no reason. we typically get so excited all set long for this song that we start spazzing out like half way into the whole shebang. so for like 20 minutes i found myself moshing with the people next to me that didnt want to mosh, then hurling myself to the front with the people who had no choice but to mosh, then falling to the floor, then grabbing hold on faris (the singer) when he came into the audience, then throwing a pinata's parts at faris when he got back on stage with Rob, then watching faris as he walked to the back of the audience where he grabbed a garbage can filled with bottles, cans, cups all filled with beer and tossed it onto the audience... then running to the front of the stage with rob so we could violently spin around and then get jumped on by faris from stage and land in a pile of garbage. Oh, and then JennyPenny and Casey threw a garbage can filled with trash back on the stage.

IT WAS FUCKING AMAZING.

I ended the festival at the horrors show for the alternative press party where i got beckoned onto stage by faris asking "where is my sheena? where is she?" So in a white dress, referencing their "sheena is a parasite" video, i got on stage and started dancing like the girl... but instead of squid coming from my nether regions, i sprayed beer onto faris and the audience. it was at that exact moment that Faris decided to surprise me by tossing me into the audience -- where i fucking landed on my back and hit my head on the cement floor... but that didnt stop me, i just jumped back up and started a mosh pit.

i'm in a lot of pain right now.

PUNK DEBUTANTE

Has anyone been watching Pussy Cat Dolls Present the Search for the Next Doll? I didnt think I would ever watch it (though, my memory is failing as i apparently told brandon's friend that i was gonna audition last summer), but I was bored the other night and it was on -- and that's how shit usually starts. I get bored.

Anyway, there was this one girl on who kinda looked like Kirsten Dunst (whom i actually like a bit). She seemed to have spunk and a great look... she was cute and had the right attitude.

So in one of the interviews she mentions that she was in some sort of punk band and naturally i was like "oh man... she wishes! No future pussy cat doll could ever be a former punk" because, apparently i think i'm an expert on these things. And then i started to think -- Debbie Harry was in a punk band AND a playboy bunny. Maybe this girl IS a punk. And then I recognized her name: Sisely. My friend Hot Robbie was telling me a story about some girl he was friends with named Sisely who was in a group called the Cooler Kids -- and as it turned out, I really loved the Cooler Kids' album. So when I saw that this cutie had the same name as the cooler kid, i texted robbie who confirmed that it was infact the same person! You should check out the Cooler Kids' MySpace page. Their songs are really great and catchy.

I love watching Fuse all day because they always play Muse's video for "Starlight" like 29 tiems a day. The video is as over the top as the band -- with them performing on an aircraft carrier, multiple camera angles from helicopters, fireworks, other boats, more helicopters (i think i counted 8), more fireworks,... its bombast that only Muse could get away with. If you haven't seen the video, watch it on youtube:

Ciara's video is the most masculine thing i've ever seen. The sound wasn't on when i saw it so i dont know if the song is any good because rob and I were blasting something else. What is that something else? There are rumors that a record from a now-defunct legendary post-hardcore band exists. Well, not only do i know that the album exists, and not only am i listening to it right now, but it's likely that we will be putting it out on stolen transmission. stay tuned for more news on this.

Also, Bright Light Fever are on tour! Horay!
AS THE FLAMES ROSE TO HER ROMAN NOSE

I don't know who is more emo -- Lawrence for making this video or me for tearing up from watching it. Either way, anyone that's friends of ours will probably really love it.

COMING SOON... THE ULTRAGRRRL BACKLASH VOLUME 1 MILLION

I've been trying to dig deep into my old collection of what really got me living and loving life when i was 20ish years old.

There's been a lot of Kill Hannah revisiting in my life and I think I have Mikey (mazel tov) to thank for that. There was this little thing in SPIN asking MCR what they've been listening to and Mikey mentioned the shoegaze beauty of Kill Hannah -- which caused a friend to say "wait, they're not shoegaze, what's he smoking?" which caused me to play him "The Curse of Kill Hannah" which was all their early stuff from 96-98. i met Mat Devine -- the singer -- at a New Years Eve party 98/99, and thought he was the coolest looking dude i'd ever laid eyes on. He looked like Adam Ant with a stripe across his cheek, a marching band uniform, and wild hair. I immediately started talking to him and found out he was in Kill Hannah. I had heard about them through my friend Marti Zimlin, and was like "cool, you're in a band..." i wasn't impressed since basically everyone in nyc is in a band and they typically suck -- well, at least in 98/99 they did. I didnt get any kill hannah music, cause i didnt know where to find any since they only had releases in chicago and this was before e-commerce, so i was like, screwed.

Then this guy named Adrian somehow got my aim and started IMing me and I found out that he was from Chicago and was a fan of Kill Hannah so i got him to send me a cassette tape of KH on side A and he threw the Longpigs on side B. THIS WAS MY FAVORITE FUCKING THING THAT I OWNED when i got this. I would listen to the tape over and over again until it eventually wore out and broke. I also became friendlier with Matt over the next couple of years, hanging out with him and his bassist greg whenever they'd come to nyc and giving them a place to stay. (BY THE WAY PEOPLE, IF YOU EVER SEE A BAND PERFORM IN YOUR TOWN, PLEASE OFFER THEM A PLACE TO STAY. BANDS ARE BROKE AND THEY NEED A NICE PLACE TO LAY THEIR HEAD AND SHOWER AND HOTELS ARE EXPENSIVE AND BANDS DONT REALLY GET TOUR SUPPORT). Matt, Greg, and I would run around NYC like we had the keys to the city and I would show up to school hungover and smelling like puke and it was actually really an amazing time in my life that I will forever cherish. Adrian and I also became incredibly close. He changed his named to Adi after finding Judaism (i think i was his first jewish friend and attributed heavily to this, but i'm not sure). Adi is now like BFF with my brother Lawrence.

Anyway, in like 2000, Kill Hannah was looking for a new guitarist and i recommended Mikey for this position. Mikey and Matt talked quite a bit over the phone and online and there was a brief moment in time when it looked like Mikey (whom i called Mike back then, btw), was gonna be the guitarist for KH, but he either couldnt afford a plane ticket to chicago or his mom wouldnt let him go or something. Then about a year or so later, mikey joined his brother gerard's band and Johnny joined KH after Mikey met him at some Nine Inch Nails or Smashing Pumpkins thing that's that. Small world, huh?

But anyway, I played the "Curse of Kill Hannah" CD for a friend of mine whose exact quote was "I HAD NO IDEA WHY YOU LIKED THESE GUYS UNTIL NOW -- HOLY SHIT THIS STUFF IS SO FUCKING GOOD." That's not to say that their new stuff isn't. It's awesome, but this old stuff -- in all it's low-fi glory, is what made my car drive faster, my self-imposed alienation from my friends that much more tolerable, and gave me some sort of weird love for the midwest ... a land i had never seen before.

IS ANYONE STILL READING THIS?

Alex and I are watching the Making of OK Computer right now. I'm not sure I am ready to deal with this to be honest. It's been ten years since the album came out and it still makes me feel the same damn way now as it did back then. I spent 3 years listening to that album once a day... their EPs, their B-sides, everything. I only would be friends with people that loved radiohead as much as I did and I would spend all my free time on radiohead newsgroups and message boards reading as much as my fucking head could consume. I made a lot of friends online with other kids that i met online. We'd meet in lines for tickets -- sleeping on the street overnight to get tickets, we'd hang out, we'd trade b-sides and live recordings and everything. oh my god, i lived for that band. every single fucking minute of my day was about radiohead. that's it. oh, and the only website i thought was really worth visiting was GreenPlastic.

When I went to see Radiohead for the first time at Radio City (i went all three nights to see them, btw), it was the first time that i was surrounded by people that were different than the people i knew at home. i felt like i belonged... which is ironic since one of the most famous lines in rh's most famous song "creep" is "i dont belong here..."

when i was 17 i was interning for abc.com and was asked to review "ok computer" and so i took home all the press material and read them on my bus rides from tenafly to the 178th street bus terminal in nyc. i would read other writers flipping out for this band the same way i did, but at the age of 17 didnt know how to articulate (still cant, really). that's when i decided that i wanted to be involved in the music industry. that's how i ended up here.

OH MY GOD, I LOVE RADIOHEAD...fuck. i can't believe how much all my feelings are rushing back to me right now, i'm on the verge of tears.

FIST

I know i've been in hiding when it comes to blogging, and i'm really sorry about that. I have no excuse. But something that got me out of hiding is this amazing video of Jada Pinkett Smith's band, Wicked Wisdom, taken from their performance on David Letterman. Gurj showed it to me yesterday and sent me and Brandon into a crying fit of laughter. i just played it for Rob and we were doubled over, crying. I have eyeliner running down my face. Now, I applaud JPS for trying... BUT OH MY FUCKING GOD!

WAKE UP

CHRIS BLACK MAKES ME LOL

The fine people at buzznet sent me this amazing phone that lets me take photos and video and immediately zap them to my Buzznet page!!!

I think i'm gonna be moving shit over there since i can blog, post photos and videos, and have like a little myspace style thing going on. Only thing i dont like is that every time someone adds me, i get an email in my buzznet inbox, and i get all these random emails that arent even for me, which is weird.

anyways.... go there.

there's also a video of my parent's apartment which is really cute. My dad became some sort of ebay art dealer in the past year, so that's why they've got nothing but paintings on the walls. it's amazing.

ROB STEVENSON, ARE YOU HAPPY NOW? WILL YOU EVER BE?

So i know it's been forever since i've posted and i've been promising a super large mega post... I've been so fucking busy with work. I don't have time to post that much, and i hardly have time to stay awake. It blows! I even decided not to have a birhtday party this year because I didnt feel like going anywhere after work and commiting to more than an hour and a half of being out of the house (I asked ppl to donate $6 to this animal rescue site, instead).

But you know, the thing is that last week had two of the best days in my life. The bands on Stolen Transmission all got flown into NYC for some workshop -- which meant that it wasn't our dime! Which was awesome!!!! This was the first time that they were all together, in one city, and so ST decided to organize that Animal Rescue benefit that all ST bands could play. Nick Snow MC'ed... which was fucking hilarious, and we filmed it for our Stolen TransVision channel we're starting up on YouTube. The Misshapes DJed. I love them all.

It worked out amazing! First off of the night were The Oohlas performing acoustic. Their drummer couldn't make it to NYC on the 22nd of January, so they went on performing with out him.

I love whenever the Oohlas perform acoustic because they have a version of "Gone" that they perform that's absolutely breathtaking. Everytime I hear it I start to transcend.

Bright Light Fever. I FUCKING LOVE BLF. They make me feel like I've crawled into the south in the 50s and took the blues guitar rock from that time, and went to the future and played it for a bunch of dudes in Sacramento and they came up with those songs. It was their first ever ever

Bright Light Fever rule my life. I feel like i have soul when i listen to them.

Next up: Monty Are I. Watching them, I think back to when I was head over heels enamoured with the Darkness (RIP). They're completely over the top and incredible to watch on stage. They make music like there are 30 people on the stage, and Steve Aiello rips on guitar! They're absolutely a band to see live.

People were freaking out over The Photo Atlas... The Denver dancepunk band which blow minds whenver they play live (and had their songs featured on the best damn sports show period on foxsports... weird, right?! Permanent Me and the Oohlas were on there as well... mindblowing). Something about them reminds me of Nine Inch Nails. Stoked head = me.

And then of course, Permanent ME played... but not til about 12 ish... and they were sauced up beyond belief. They had something to celebrate since at midnight was their release date. Hollur! Secondly, they were finally done with a 3 week long tour with Fall Out Boy and got to see a bunch of their friends.

Raizza won a raffle prize and will be appearing in the new Cartel video!!!!

The photo in the post below was taken on Jan 23, at the Time Hotel when all the bands got together to bullshit and smoke weed with the RZA! Yes! AMAZING!

Anyway, I wrote this long thing about American Idol from a couple episodes ago, and i wanna share... when i say "Yesterday" i mean, like on jan 24.

Lastnight when I got home from work at 10pm, I sat down on my ridiculously comfy couch with orange seitan from wild ginger (holy shit, that stuff is unreal), and re-watched American Idol from the night before on my dvr. I had actually watched it on wednesday night but completely forgot it after injesting enough bacardi mixed drinks at a defjam function that I lost all inhibition and started booty dancing with an artist they were showcasing named Sterling. This was imediately followed by me getting high fived by all the women who work at defjam that couldn't believe how lucky I was to swivel my hips with a very hot singer who insisted on lifting his t-shirt to reveal a very lovely six pack. Yum. Sterling Sims, will you be my baby daddy?

Anyway, before I went on a tangent, I was talking about American Idol...

This year is gonna be the best year ever, mark my words. First off, there were two guys who made it to hollywood that are possibly two of the hottest dudes I've seen on tv (excluding my bf's face that I see on fuse every other hour). One of them was a perfect mixture of Justin Timberlake and 3/4 of Thrice. Equal parts pretty and dude-like and possibly sensitive. He'd possibly buy you tampons when your back hurts too much to leave the house, and he'd probably punch a dude for looking at you weird and he'd show off his singing every once in a while as he plays lacross or soccer with his buddies, but you love him for all that.

You even love him when he is the lead in Guys and Dolls.

The other guy was hands down the most gorgeous person to walk the planet. I could not believe my eyes when I saw him. A 16 year old 6'4 (or more) black man (he surely was no boy) that had been adopted by Bolivian parents that undoubtedly look at him everyday and think they won the adoption lottery.... Whose very existence will probably prompt people to adopt more. This man is perfect. Picture Tyson Beckford mixed with Bratt Pitt and mutiply the hotness by a 1000 and you're close. Plus he could sing! Oh could he sing! If he doesn't win AI, he will have a future in front of the camera because his face and his soul belongs there to make us happy as a society. I'm sorry Jackson Pollis, but I have a new teen dream.

Now, I'm not gonna just give love to the boys because the girls were equally as impressive. I'd like to start off with my diappointment with the judges not picking that adorably hyper and energetic gapped tooth girl who pleaded that a lot of people were counting on her to go to Hollywood. She was obviously talented and actually quite adorable and sweet. It was obvious to the home viewer why she didn't get picked and frankly, I'm disgusted by the judges and their shallowness. Yes, there's an irony to me saying that after I've just dedicated so much time celebrating the beauty of two male contestants, but I'm a fan of the underdog, being one myself.

That said...

Among the women who made it to Hollywood were a pair of best friends from NJ that were pretty much the female equivelent to the two men I mentioned above. One was a gorgeous Barbara Streisand-mini, while the other was a more exotic version of Jessica Beil. They both boasted how amazing they were before appearing in front of the judges in a way that American Idol likes to set up people before knocking them down after they perform a horrendous audition. However these girls actually had the chops to back up their immodesty. And yes, AI will be super sexy this year.

My favorite of the night, however, was the little bracefaced opera singer with her joseph and the technicolor hair. She wore a dream catcher in her long mane and more colors than Ollie Stone. This girl was everything you'd picture a new yorker to be: confident, weird, jewish (I think), clever, and tough. Her audition song was by Jeff Buckley and she belted out his words like a polished up joplin. When the jusdges couldn't really guage her based on that, she sang one of the songs that the contestants have to sing all the time in hollywood that I've forgotten the name of. When that wasn't enough, she belted out some opera gorgeously and with such a natural ease that it was almost shocking. Needless to say, she made it to Hollywood and might unfortunately be kicked out of her school for auditioning. Hopefully it will be worth it.

But the real reason I liked this girl so much is because she was a character straight out of a Woody Allen movie. She was basically every young female role evr scripted by allen rolled into one. When the judges questioned her diversity, she shot back with such an obvious response that was either genius or crazy (much like allen), but also right on the mark and very deadpan: "you change the theme every week and I can do it all." Or something like that. THEN after her audition, while standing outside on some sort of deck, she looked right into the camera with determination and declared "the south has had a lockdown on american idol and I'm going to end that!" how many teenaged girls would ever say that? Ugh! I'm in love!

FOSTER FUN

My friend Jenny Penny is a dedicated foster parent to many dogs in need of help (something that I plan on doing as soon as Monkey gets fixed this month). For those of you interested in helping out as well, please read!:

The city shelters are overflowing with post-holiday-dump dogs on death row. If anyone can house one for even a few days, we could use your help. Many are very sweet middle-aged dogs that are smaller than your average cat and need little more than a pillow, short walks, and some food. (Well, that and some laptime!)
Can you lend a hand to a paw?

Please see our web site www.waggytailrescue.org to see some of the dogs we currently have in the care of our foster parents. All of these would have been put to sleep had people not stepped up to help them out. Often even a few days is helpful!

To find out more about fostering please visit www.waggytailrescue.org
email waggytailrescue@gmail.com

Thank you!!!!

currently in need:

COME AND KNOCK ON MY DOOR

Leviticus Jewelry posted a new bulletin that they had new pieces up and i fell in love with this one (among 3032 others)... i would've personally named it knockers:
