so what rating is SPIN giving it? it got a "C" (and a mean-spirited Strokes reference) from EW and a decent amount of stars from Blender.

Anonymous said...

and they're on jimmy kimmel tonight.

Anonymous said...

SPIN isn't reviewing the record because they're not the Dave Matthews Band, but they are going to put them on the cover in about two years and calle them a cool new band. Just like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

i wasn't impress much about the album since i haven't heard that much but if i could do a song i'd totally like to at least make out with "under the gun". don't know if it's in the album, but's killers' best. totally do-abble.

Bri said...

I agree! Under the Gun is my favorite, too. It's not on Hot Fuss, though.

sarah, I think you'd dig our band Rollo. demo complications, so no music on the site (we're so new) but we're at www.rollo-ny.com

I'm totally digging this album since my buddy Dave (his band's manager also handles The Killers) played it for me a while ago. I don't understand the EW review at all though...did the guy even listen to the disc? It's catchy as hell!

I have yet to see 'em live since I missed their set when they were here with Stellastar* a few weeks ago...everyone else said The Kills were best band of the night.

i hate to kind of sink down to this level, but...
can we quit with the spin bashing already? it's so tired. just go ahead and talk about how elitist you are and how nobody is as cool as you... and that way you save people's feelings. for me, i am so impressed with recent strides in their coverage that i just picked up a subscription. they are making some really great changes and you guys are too busy trying to look cool to notice. you don't like spin? don't read it. you don't like sarah? don't come here. but some people do, so some people will. to me spin is in a great place bringing important music to the mass market, and they are (as of recent months) doing a great job. and i mean come on, i will always respect the fact that they had the balls to put morrissey on the cover. now i have written this whole paragraph and haven't even talked about how cool the killers cd is. oh well. that's the last of that you'll hear from me about that. i have this crazy idea that i should keep my (occasionally spiteful) opinions to myself.

I had been scouting them since they were unsigned playing in Las Vegas..i always liked "Mr. Brightside" and "jenny " the most..wonder if those songs are on their album.

Thanks for mentioning my band (Film School) in the last issue, Sarah (SXSW article). Glad you liked the show. My roommate put the page up on our fridge with our name highlighted. I just Googled your name and found yer blog...or ex-blog...

We'll probably be playing in NY in a few months - I'll put you on our mailing list if you want.

Karen said...

the killers are duran duran the smiths and love love love rolled into one. they are heartwarming and assshaking and anyone who snubs them because theyre "overhyped" has no soul and should probably get out a bit more.

ps -- above commenter, film school rules! 11:11 is such a good song!

Anonymous said...

So people tell me that this cd doesn't really have their best work on it. What songs should I dig up on the internet by them instead?

Ultragrrrl said...

Hmm... my personal favorite Killers songs are on the album. "Jenny" and "Midnight Show" and "Somebody Told Me" and "Everything Will Be Alright" and "All These Things That I've Done." Whoa. I nearly named the entire track listing. Yeah, it's good and I'm sort of obsessed.

anyone know the set times for tonight's franz ferdinand show at webster hall?

Ultragrrrl said...

Franz goes on at 10pm, but i STRONGLY urge everyone to check out the opening band called Sons&Daughters. They're absolutely enchanting and wonderful.

Anonymous said...

Not far superior, but I do prefer it.

this is me said...

I played the disc for friends cleaning a kitchen tonite and one described it as sounding like the cure.

hey ultrrrrrrra, i just got new beastie boys spin, and there was no making out with you. please tell me this is a mistake. or is the queen dead?

Karen said...

The reason you should buy into these new bands, as opposed to shunning them for sounding like bands of the past is because they are NEW. Because the older bands are past their prime (may I remind you of "Electric Barbarella?" The new Cure single perhaps?). The world of music survives on influence and evolution. You can sit in your room and listen to "Hungry Like the Wolf" for the 2398402384023th time, or you can get your head out of your ass and get excited about a NEW classic, like "Smile Like You Mean It."

"hey ultrrrrrrra, i just got new beastie boys spin, and there was no making out with you. please tell me this is a mistake. or is the queen dead?"

there was so much overload with coachella coverage that there just wasn't any room for the "making out" column. it'll be back in the following issue.

Anonymous said...

hell yea! they were killer at weenie roast...sorry, i know the pun was weak!

Bri said...

Has it ever occured to anyone (I'm sure it has, I just need to reiterate) that maybe the Killers' and other bands' intent is NOT to copy? Of course they're going to sound like older bands (i.e. Duran Duran) because those bands influenced them. Often times, when you grow up listening to certain bands, your own music will reflect that. The Killers are just playing the kind of music that they love, and the kind that inspires them. If it's awesome music, who cares if it sounds like someone else?

Karen said...

I dont think anyone is saying that the Killers are the next Beatles... Theyre just a band making immeasurably entertaining music... NOW. Only time will tell if they can crank out enough hits to be uttered in the same breath as Duran Duran, but lets all stop overanalyzing and just ENJOY THE TUNES.

Chris Clark said...

Are the Killers a Duran Duran cover band? No.
I don't know why everyone always has to compare an up-and-coming band to some previous artist; it's usually the Cure, Joy Division, Smiths or Kraftwerk-esque sound. Now we have everyone crying that they sound like Duran Duran? Who cares. I still love it!

I had a chance to interview the Killers at Coachella and talk to them after the show and they're just really happy to be where they are. They had 100% creative control over the album; Lizard King and Island Records both let them do whatever they want. I'm sure in future releases (let me remind you, this is their first full-length) you'll see even more diversity with this talented group.

Finally I don't think Sarah is trying to trick people into liking the Killers. She's not getting paid on the side to run this blog and act as the PR rep for the band. If you don't like the Killers, Spin or don't like what Sarah has to write, don't read it.

Baby Bruise, you're a fantastic idiot. You probably don't remember the early 80s. I do, vividly (well, the parts I can remember). Duran Duran was trashed as a shallow, meaningless piece of junk that wouldn't survive past the time it took your TV's risidual glow to cease. No one except 15 year-old suburban girls thought they were any good. So stop being an asshole and listen to your elders:

Instead of trying to find sources, influences, and the like, why not sit down, throw back a few shots, and get a blow job from some dumb socialite while listening to The Killers? I highly recommend it and it's the reason this will be one of my favorite albums this year.

Christ, when everyone get so fuckin' serious about music? It's pop, morons! You're not saving the world. You're not changing the world. Have daddy continue paying your fuckin' rent and shut the fuck up. Enjoy the music. And, if The Killers are reading this, thanks for the soundtrack!

So...exactly when did bringing new band's to people's attention become a ticket to scrutiny-ville? Geez people. EVERYTHING is derivitive from the past, whether it be music, politics or whatever. Remember how many people said that Modest Mouse was ripping off the Pixies? What they didn't realize was how many alt/punk bands were influenced by the Pixies and other groundbreaking bands of that particular era. Once again...everything is derivitive. If you don't think so, grab your guitar and try try try again to come up with something TOTALLY original that doesn't sound like one artist or another. Relax. It's music, made for our enjoyment.

At the risk of sounding like a stalker, was it you Ultra that I saw walking down Rivington at about 7:30 or 8 on Friday night? I was eating at Schiller's and I saw someone resembling you walk by. Maybe it was the bizarro Ultra. I don't know.

Ultragrrrl said...

Yup! that was probably me!

Ultragrrrl said...

Yup! that was probably me! I live three blocks from Schillers and walked by there at about 8ish on friday for sure. What did you eat there?

I had the hamachi fish (yellowtail). It was the fish special for the evening. It was excellent.

Ultragrrrl said...

Yup! I was there as well. I didn't stay long cause it got really crowded and I was pretty drunk and tired from dancing so much and wanted to find my bed.

anyone go to the franz show in philly on saturday? i was there too.

Back on topic (slightly)...what’s the deal with the Spin Magazine/Killers Party Thursday night? Anyone going?

bought the killers this weekend and it's great...
especially love "on top" and "smile like you mean it".

my take: i think their sound is great, and i'm not comparing them to anyone i've hear before. like was stated in an earlier post; it's just music!!???!!!???!!

More importantly, England just beat Croatia 4-2 in the Euro 2004 1st round, which means we've won our group out right and go on to play Greece in the next round, which pretty much means we're through to the next round coz Greece won't hold up against our boys. After Greece? Who's knows but, we're on a roll and in the words of another great 80's band - Starship - "Nothing's gonna stop us now!" and I bet you thought this comment had nothing to do with music! Sarah, dust of your Beckham scarf, its time to cheer on your 51st state!

Is there a reason that there's no making out with ultragrrrl in the new SPIN. am i just missing it, or is the column gone? because I love making out and I love Ultragrrrl, and making out with ultragrrrl is the best thing there is. Please someone tell me if its no more.
