VINCENT GALVIN 1983-2008

I'm going to miss my dear friend Vinny so much. I've been missing him for months, but I will never see him again, now. I should've gotten together with him when i had the chance. I hate myself for that.

This was his last bit of work. He produced this Amazing Baby video. It's gorgeous:

MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE'S BLOG

Is the best blog that you're probably not reading.

They're on a much deserved vacation and holy shit, their blog is hilarious. Here's a sample from Gerard Way's blog posting:

And even more interesting than the contestants, challenges, and the orange spray-tan club goers of Scottsdale, Arizona (of COURSE this is where the show is filmed) is Mystery's wardrobe.

This is a man that knows how to take RISKS.
Mind you, these aren't risks that I would ever take but you gotta respect a guy thats Ren-Faire from the neck down and fighter-pilot meets X-Games roadie from the neck up. With Gladiator boots.

And can we talk about how likable this guy is?
This is a man that eats his own cereal in the morning if you know what I'm saying.

Ah... the Pick-Up Artist is a show close to my heart.

LILY ALLEN'S NEW VIDEO FOR "THE FEAR"

The song is fantastic. The video is adorable and looks like it cost a bagillion dollars to make (how much do you think it costs to rent Versailles Palace?).

It's makes me think of this song called "The Fear" by Pulp:

I actually find myself singing the Pulp version far too often:
This is the sound of someone losing the plot -
making out that they're okay when they're not.
You're gonna like it, but not a lot & the chorus goes like this:
Oh Baby, here comes the fear again.
The end is near again.
If you ever get that chimp off your back.
If you ever find the thing that you lack
but you know you're only having a laugh
& here we go again.
Until the end

Yeah... but I can see myself singing this line from Lily's version to myself a few times in the future:
I don’t know what’s right and what’s real anymore
I don’t know how I’m meant to feel anymore
When we think it will all become clear
‘Cuz I’m being taken over by The Fear

I LOVE THIS BRITNEY SONG!

"Amnesia", which was a bonus track on the Japanese version of the Britney Spears album Circus, is so fucking good.

It's so fucking good.
It sounds like a Santogold song, straight up... but it's written by Fernando Garibay and Kasia Livingston, both of whom I've never heard of.

You gotta give it a listen. Fucking brilliant.

Britney Spears - "Amnesia"

LIVING THINGS - "LET IT RAIN"

Eve from Living Things is finally on Twitter. He's still new to the service and so I think he'll be fully addicted in about 30 hours. Will his twitters be as good as mine? Only time will tell.

But Eve can write a better song than I ever will be able to (that is, at least, until someone asks me to write lyrics for Britney Spears' songs). Living Things' song "Let It Rain" is so good. I listen to it whenever it rains, which is often these days. Their next single is a ditty called "Oxygen" that is just so wtf good. I want to post the mp3 of it, but i'm scared that their management or label would show up in my office and shoot me. Gah-burp!

Anyway, download it. I snuck it on my blog. I wasn't supposed to but I don't think enough people read this for it to really matter.

Lastly, Courtney Love name dropped me in a blog yesterday! Hollur! I'm stoked. Ollie noticed it for me... I don't know if i would've been able to find it myself.

RUBY: THE 7 YEAR OLD FEMINIST

I've known my friend Marcel's daughter, Ruby, since she was about 2 years old. She used to come into the SPIN offices and sit at Sia Michel's desk and pretend to be the Editor In Chief of SPIN. I actually felt threatened that she'd take my job. Here's a video of her getting interviewed by Amy Poehler... incase you needed any more reasons to love Amy.

THANKSGIVING DINNER MUSIC

I'm celebrating Thanksgiving at my boyfriend's this year and was asked to play DJ for this dinner event which will consist of a 10-course meal prepared by him and his two buddies. The three of them are 20 year restaurant veterans.

I'm very excited.

My other job is preparing an Amaretto Charlotte or Charlotte Amaretto or something along those lines that I've never had in my life, i don't think. I will probably fuck this up so I'd like to make sure that I can at least deliver on the dinner music.

So I've been asked to make two mixes: One for the pre-dinner and the other for the actual dinner. I'm thinking string renditions of Radiohead songs and some jazz (my bf likes jazz a lot and so he's made his suggestions). I'm thinking my favorite mellow songs of my favorite albums, and hoping that those aren't totally slit-your-wrist depressing.

My friend Xiomara sent me this nice mashup which pissed off the newly resurrected KarenPlusOne. She said that mashups should be for mosh pits (or mash pits?) and not elevators. I disagree. I am quite happy to have this to play on Thursday night:

Lionel Richie's "Easy Like Sunday Morning" x The Cure's "Lovesong"

Enjoy.

Lastly, when Brandon left me I went kinda super utterly sad for a few weeks or a month and then went to see a "spiritual adviser" or "psychic" ... anyone interested in hearing about it? Should i blog about it or is that kinda too personal?

PINK IS WEIRD.

DAY AND AGE

The Killers new album is SO FUCKING GOOD.

I can't take it. I want to cry it's so good. I want to go to a gun store and purchase a gun and shoot myself in the head because it's so good.

I don't know how they do it. I don't know how they take a year off to write an album and come up with this fucking piece of work. it's like the best of 80s bowie and talk talk and all those new romantics that did tons of blow but somehow made really great albums.

it's like brandon shaved off that beard his, looked in the mirror and was like "oh, hai thar handsome. you should make music that sounds as clean as you look." and then yelled over to tana "honey! can i borrow your cute blazer with the big shoulder pads? i've got a record to write." and then he called the rest of the dudes and was like "yo, dust off your eyeliner and grab your parliament filters, it's time to go back to our roots. put on your red shoes and dance the blues."

it's not brandon flowers. it's 1986 david bowie from the movie Labyrinth.

Best Christmas song ever:

YOU SHOULDA PUT A RING ON IT

Joanna has me practicing this dance day and night to prepare for our winter recital:

but seriously... thing that happens :50 mark of this video makes me feel weird in the pants:

BRITNEY SPEARS COUNTDOWN - 13 DAYS

We're thirteen days away from Britney Spears' album release for Circus and I can't stop listening to it. I posed this question to my twitter friends and I'll post it to you guys:
in "womanizer", do you think it's "i got your crazy" or "i got you're crazy"? the two of them are very different. VERY.

Anyway, here is a video for "Gimme More," which was shot in the heyday of her bi-polar psychopathic breakdown. It's pretty fucking genius and I think she may have directed it herself:

And here's one of the best pop songs ever written: "Love Will Tear Us Apart" by Joy Division:

I would like to coordinate a covers album for Britney. As in songs she should cover. It would include all the songs I've been posting in this countdown. Holy shit... couldnt you image that? It'd be fucking genius? Britney would be EPIC. Her covering Joy Division? Her covering the Pumpkins and Hole?? WILL BRITNEY'S A&R PERSON PLEASE CONTACT ME TO MAKE THIS HAPPEN. I NEED TO MAKE THIS HAPPEN. PLEASE.

FELL IN LOVE WITH A BLACK GIRL

The Cataracs ode to Michelle Obama. hahahaha:

THE KILLERS' DAY & AGE

OK Ladies and Gentlemen...

The Killers. They are fucking here. Day & Age is the best 80s Bowie record that he never wrote.

I almost can't believe that this album was created. It's really fucking crazy. So so so good. Took them only a year to write it, which is fucking fast considering how strange and fantastic it is.

It's a weird album. I mean that in the best way. It's not even weird in a growing way, it's weird in a right-off-the-bat-this-is-fantastic way.

Oh, and look. Photos of Brandon:
JESUS. WHAT ARE YOU DOING LOOKING SO CUTE?

BRITNEY SPEARS COUNTDOWN - 14 DAYS

I'm counting down to the days until Britney Spears' new album Circus comes out because I want her to fucking WIN! Britney Spears FTW, if you will.

I got the album last night. It's fucking great. I thought Blackout was totally fucking sublime. Like, surprise, this album is fucking great because she was totally strung out and crazy when she recorded it so you can hear her fucking pain. She's fucking Courtney Love.

Here's "I'm A Slave 4 U"... I think people probably m'bated to this video:

Here's the video for Hole's "Miss World." When I was 14 or 15 I wanted to be Courtney Love. She was my fucking idol. I LIVED LIVED LIVED LIVED for the album Live Through This. I had to listen to it every day because Courtney was the only person who sung the words I felt before I even knew I felt them. I'm gonna name drop for a second because I am so stoked: About a month ago Courtney emailed me on MySpace!!!! I wrote her back saying "OMG I have been waiting 13 years for this email!" And then we talked on the phone for an hour. Dude, I NEED TO INVENT A TIME MACHINE SO I CAN GO BACK TO 1995 AND BE LIKE "OMG SARAH YOU'RE GONNA FUCKING FLIP YOUR SHIT WHEN I TELL YOU WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN IN 13 YEARS!" I told Courtney about my break up with Brandon in full detail that I would reserve for a therapist. Maybe she'll write the Brandon and Sarah breakup record so he doesn't have to. No hard feelings btw me and him, but breakups are hard. We're still bff. Yay. Anyway... "Miss World":

Bonus:
I'm adding this Hole video for their cover of "Gold Dust Woman" just because the song is totally rad and I totally forgot about it until i was looking up the video for "Miss World":

MY FUCKING BAND

I wanna win shit from Guitar Hero because they've stolen too much of my free time with their awesome game.

GUESS HOW MUCH I LOVE THE KILLERS?

You can see how much I love them :36 seconds into this clip. Hahaha. Oh man. Tragic outfit = me.

BRITNEY SPEARS COUNTDOWN - 15 DAYS

Britney Spears is like a modern day Jesus Christ: She was born in December and basically died after being crucified on a steak (or in this case -- tied down to a gurney) and managed to resurrect herself. Britney's album comes out on her 27th birthday and if things keep going the way they're going, she very well could survive the 27 Club/Curse of 27 -- the age that took away Kurt Cobain, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison. Something nobody would've guessed when this photo of her surfaced:

Everyone is celebrating Britney. She's come full circle. It used to be totally uncool to like her and now it's uncool to not like her. It's uncool to not cheer for her. It's uncool to not hope she fucking comes out on top.

Every day I'm going to post a Britney video until her new album comes out and a classic video from a favorite band of mine.

Here is "Piece of Me" because it's so fucking sick:

Here is Smashing Pumpkins' video for "Zero" which I watched this morning 3 times in a row cheering each time it started over again because they all look so fucking cool. I wanted to email James Iha and be like "Dude, you were so fucking cool in this video!!!!!!!!! Can I have your autograph???":

JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE MEETS SIOUXIE

I love Justin Timberlake. I love Siouxie Sioux.

Lawrence sent me this mashup/remix via Stef.

TOKYO POLICE CLUB ARE TOO CUTE

Here they are on Desperate Housewives. So so so so cute:

I LOVE HOUSTON PRESS

HoustonPress reviewed Pitchfork's new book The Pitchfork 500: “Our Guide to the Greatest Songs from Punk to the Present", and included this as the kicker:

If you’re looking for a singles-based guide of much better musical quality and usefulness, pick up a copy of Sarah “Ultragrrl” Lewitinn’s playlist-based The Pocket DJ instead.

TOKYO POLICE CLUB GET SOME COUGARS

My favorite group of little dudes, Tokyo Police Club, will be appearing on this Sunday's episode of Desperate Housewives. They're appearing as the fictional band called Cold Splash.

Expect them to LOOK ADORABLE and to perform their song "In A Cave".

I have no idea what the context of this appearance is, but you better fucking believe I will be posting the clip once it airs!

I also have been meaning to post a video of David Monks performing TPC songs in my living room a little over a year ago.

PUT ME IN THE RING WITH CORGAN

FTW!

THAT'S IT! ITS OFFICIAL. I FOUND EVERYTHING ON THE INTERNET.

I WOKE UP IN 2004!!!!

I think i have the Norovirus. I thought it was food poisoning because I had late-night Mexican food... but I went to bed at 1am on Sunday night and was unable to leave my bed until 1pm today.

This is OK! YOU WANNA KNOW WHY???

Because apparently I woke up in 2004. I had no idea that that was possible, but it happened.

I know it happened because not only was gothamist writing stories about me that brought along "omg ultragrrrl sucks" comments (ah, the good old days), but THE KILLERS AND FRANZ FERDINAND HAVE SONGS THAT ARE MAKING FUCKING STOKED.

The Killers - A Crippling Blow (thanks Pretty Much Amazing)
Franz Ferdinand - Ulysses (thanks JP's Blog)

NOT ONLY THAT...

But I have a new R&B song that I love to rival maybe... maybe... my love of Gwen's song from that year... AND she's on tour with Kanye West right now in the UK:

Melanie Finoa - Give It To Me Right

LOL!!!!

"HEAD OVER HEELS" VIDEO LITERALLY DONE

I love Tears for Fears. Seriously. When I lived with my parents in Tenafly, I used to eat Chinese food from Mr. Chow's, play Gamecube on mute, and have Tears For Fears' Songs From The Big Chair playing on a record player.

Anyway, here's a very literal version of Tears For Fears' "Head Over Heels" that Gurj sent over:

CHRISTINA DOES "GENIE" RIGHT

I love this version of "Genie in a Bottle" that Xtina did. It makes me think that she's been listening to a LOT of Goldfrapp, which can only be a good thing. She performed a bit of it at the 2008 MTV VMAs this year... and I think it's better than her new single and I bet this song will do really well.

RANDY FROM THE MYRIAD HAS BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH CANCER

A little under a year ago I participated in an MTV2 contest called the Dew Circuit Breakout, which was a sort of battle-of-the-bands that would give small bands a music video and guaranteed exposure on MTV2. I was on the panel of judges, which included Pete Wentz from Fall Out Boy and Gabe Seporta from Cobra Starship. I picked the winning band The Myriad. Hollur! That's why my fucking ears are paid the big bucks! (that's a joke. i'm poor a sin).

I just found out today via Maura@Idolator that Randy from The Myriad recently got diagnosed with Cancer and his not-so-helpful insurance plan will most likely put his family into financial crisis. It kills me -- Randy was such a sweetheart when I met him. To find out that he's got a wife and two kids is just too heartbreaking. The band is asking fans to help Randy Miller and his family out!

CLICK HERE TO FIND OUT HOW TO HELP

A few people I know have been diagnosed with cancer and are either in remission or currently fighting their battle. As we moan and groan about our own personal financial crises, please remember those who are even less fortunate to deal with health issues like cancer. Whether it's how you vote, how you donate money, or just giving your friends the love and support they need -- everything helps.

My love goes to Randy Miller and his family, and my other friends who are suffering from Cancer. You know who you are... obviously.

PS - One thing that one of my friends does is employ the "Cancer Card". When it comes to picking a song, a place to eat, or a movie, she uses her "Cancer Card" to have the final say. I guess there's at least one perk, right?

Thanks Gurj for the link!

LIVING THINGS ROCK THE VOTE

For those of you reading this blog, you know i'm kind of a freak about Living Things. Can you blame me? Their song "Let it Rain" is kind of the best song I've heard all year.

Besides appearing in Roberto Cavalli ads along side the illustrious Kate Moss, the band is also incredibly politically minded and active.

First off, check out this video directed by Floria Sigismondi on SPIN.com, in which the band discuss the album's creation and unveil song snippets. Plus stream the song, "Let It Rain."

PLAY THAT SHIT LOUD.

And check out this little nod to Bob Dylan that the band did on ObeyGiant.com:

TWILIGHT CRAZY

OK, OK, OK... I'm kind of Twilight crazy just like every other bitch with ovaries in this world.

Here is Paramore's video for "Decode" for the Twilight Soundtrack. I think that out of all those shitty bands coming from the scene, I like Paramore the most because Haley is a fucking star:

Also, Rob Pattinson and the director of Twilight, Catherine Hardwicke, will be at the Apple Soho Store tonight. Click here for more info.

And lastly, I recommend you follow @MrEdwardCullen on twitter. He's kind of hilarious.

I'm going to see Uh Huh Her tonight with Joanna... Their video has a Unicorn in it!!!!

omgomgogmgomgomg i want it:

MISSION CONTROL

I met Hadouken's manager during CMJ and she handed Joanna and I a copy of a new band she's working with called Mission Control from Australia.

I stuck it in my laptop today to give it a listen and was like "um...". It's basically a band that was invented by my brain. Think Love & Rockets meets Psychedelic Furs meets Sisters of MercyPRIMAL SCREAM!!!!!! ... or basically my Manchester in the 90s mix on shuffle.

Check out their video for "Innerspace" which looks exactly like it should:

DOWN THE DRAIN BY ALEXIS FOX AKA MY NEW SOUNDTRACK

Mandarin phrase of the day: wo mei you mei jing = I have no American money.

IT MAKES ME WANT TO CRY.

I wake up every day singing "Down the Drain" by Alexis Fox and cursing the day i ever thought "oh... it's only $200 for this pair of shoes!"

Which, for the record, has happened three times.

::sniffle::

PLEASE GIVE ME THIS

According to The Secret, if I ask for something, I will get it. It's been working pretty well so far, and so I will ask for something now on my blog:

I would like to get the new G1 Google Android Phone for T-Mobile. I have been kicking around with a Sidekick ID for almost the past year after my Sidekick3 kicked the bucket mysteriously (the backlight refuses to work and I NEVER get calls).

So, if anyone reading this would like to give me a G1 Google Android Phone, I would be really happy. I don't have $350 to pay for it. The only way I could get it for $170 is if I add an additional phone line, which seems really silly.

Thank You!
Love,
Sarah

SUBWAY (F)ART

I sometimes take the 6 Train to work and have been noticing some kind of odd billboards around the Union Square train station. Initially, I thought that advertising copywriters were just getting more clever and weird. I mean, I'm a little weird myself, so I have a hard time knowing what's actually acceptable to others. But finally, this morning, I walked up to examine one of the posters more closely... this wasn't it, but it was basically the same thing done to the same campaign:

Pretty good, right?

And then I coincidentally went to ThighsWideShut.Org and saw that he had a blog posting about it with a link to a flickr page of the artist! Here are some more gems:

AND THE ARTIST AT WORK:

I CAN'T GET ENOUGH OF LIVING THINGS

I'm sorry, I'm just so fucking obsessed with Living Things' "Let it Rain." My iTunes play counter says I've listened to it 30 times and that doesn't include the amount of times I listened to it on their MySpace and website. Even NYLONmag.com likes it.

I love that and Kings of Leon's "Sex On Fire".

Is there any way to embed MySpace players?

Here's some photos of Living Things since they're pretty and Floria Sigismondi took them and I'm a huge fan of hers:

THE CURSE OF KILL HANNAH

Anyone that's been reading this blog for a while knows that I'm very good friends with the Kill Hannah boys. I met Mat Devine when I was an 18 year old virgin with braces that was just simply charmed by the fact that he looked like Adam Ant and wanted to be his bestfriend immediately. It makes me so sad to hear the following news, but I'm so happy that nobody was hurt:

Kill Hannah’s bus caught on fire and burned down over the last couple of hours, going from Bologna, Italy where they played last night to Paris, where they are supposed to play tomorrow. They are in the Swiss Alps, and we have just gotten them to a hotel.

Everyone is out alive and safe...but they’ve lost most of their personal belongings. We have lost passports, etc, but fortunately their cash was in a safe and it survived the fire.

They're are going to have to do emergency passports in Switzerland as they cant leave the country to go to any other part of europe without them, so they will most likely need to cancel Paris and Belgium. The gear in the trailer seems to be all that made it, but we have no idea what else is lost that may be necessary for gigs, etc...

CMJ

The thing that sucks for people who work and live in NYC during CMJ is that we have to work during CMJ week and then see bands at night/day and then come back into the office the next day. When we go to Austin for SXSW, we go to meetings, we drink bloody mary's, we goof around and see bands and we're don't have to go to a fucking office. It's way better. CMJ is miserable for local music industry folks. I think that the local music industry folk should just get together and say "OK, for 4 days we can get away with not showing up to the office. Shit will still work out." Until then, I shall weep.

On Thursday I'm DJing at Whiskey Blue, so if you need an escape from the madness of CMJ, please come say hi to me. I'll be DJing from 10pm - 2am.

Sadly, this means that the shows that I was going to see on Thursday are basically no longer happening.

If I could, I would drop everything to see:
I fucking love The Shivers. One sunday afternoon, about a year ago, Brandon and I were heading back home from brunch at the Norwood. We had had such a lovely and splendid afternoon filled with amazing food and bloody marys... and our cold limbs trudged into the F-Train subway station to wait for the subway. There was this dude in a Yankees jacket, hoodie, baseball cap, jeans, sunglasses... he looked strung out or something. It was Keith from The Shivers. He played songs off a keyboard that was mounted on top of a walker that an old man would use. It was almost romantic and sad all at the same time. As the train arrived, he played "Creep" by Radiohead. It was fucking gorgeous. I bought one of his albums right there for $5 and listened to it a bunch.

GO SEE HIM PLAY.

This is him:

Also, I am going to be presenting something called "The Ultragrrrl Report" on FUSE's new show "FUSE On Tour" starting November 9th, and every Sunday after that. Basically, I'm going to be talking about shows I've seen that week, Tour news, and up-and-coming bands that I saw and loved. I'm really fucking excited about this opportunity! I love talking about music and sharing the music I love with people and being on TV. Haha. Watch me!

PHOTOS FROM THIS WEEKEND

On Saturday afternoon, I went to Spitzer's Corner with Wyatt to grab a quick brunch. Unfortunately, it took an hour for our food to arrive so I canceled my order, but while waiting for it I glanced to the other side of the restaurant and saw Sarah Silverman and Jimmy Kimmel brunching together. I literally gasped and said "OMG! Wyatt!" He replied "I know, I'm friends with them, so make sure I say hi before we leave." Then I glanced over to the couple next to us and they were possibly more gorgeous than Brangelina and spent the rest of the time there creeping on them. When the couple left, our waitress came over and said "Did you guys see who is here?!?!" I replied "Forget about them! Did you see the couple sitting next to us? Genetic perfection! I hope thye make babies immediately."

About 20 minutes later, while we were still waiting for our food, Sarah and Jimmy walked by and Wyatt called out to Sarah. "Do you remember me? It's Wyatt. I cut my hair off." Sarah and Jimmy freaked out -- kind of like I would if I had gone up to them instead of the other way around. "OH MY GOD!!!! WYATTTT!!!!!!!!!!!" They were so cute and affectionate with each other and Sarah introduced herself to me and Wyatt described me as "My super Jewish friend who is dating a Black." Sarah and I talked about the election and being jews and her viral video and then made plans with Wyatt to see him later that night.

This is Wyatt:

Then I went to my boyfriend, David's. We were going to go to Mitsuwa -- the Japanese market in Edgewater, NJ -- but opted to just be lazy and wait for dinnertime. We met up with Gurj, Joanna, Chris Black, and Courtney the Intern at the Vegetarian Dim Sum House... which is too fucking good. David and I went a couple weeks ago and a group of monks walked in and one of them had a Jonas Brothers ringtone on their cell phone.

Then David and Gurj got gellatos.

After making a quick pitstop at Chris Black's apt, I went with David and Joanna to the Mercury Lounge to see Glasvegas. Joanna and I are obsessed with them and managed to work our way up front which is good since we're both midgets. The band were scheduled to go on at 11:30pm, which usually means 12am, but they didnt go on til about 12:20. My legs were in pain, but I got some good photos:

Then David and I went to the SNL afterparty since the Killers played. Dave, Rob W, and the other dude whose name I forgot were at this one table texting furiously the whole night.

On Sunday I went to Brian Battjer's with Mandy stellastarr* and Wyatt to play RockBand2. On our way there we passed by this fantastic mural. It appears as if it's depicting Barak Obama and John McCain.

And then this poster of what appears to be Abe Lincoln hybred with Barak Obama... but again, not too sure:
