LINE UP THE WHITE CARPET

The SPIN 20th Anniversary Bash on Wednesday went really well. Those sort of things could go so terribly wrong all the time. From a performer not showing up to a guest getting into a brawl, so many factors can put an event that's supposed to be really fun into geopardy. Thankfully, that wasn't the case here.

I spent the day attepting, but failing, to power nap. I can't remember what I did for most of the day (including the actual party itself), but I'm pretty sure it included a lot of working from home. It seems like I've been goofing off a lot less and focusing on work a lot more, or at least trying to. Oh wait, now i remember... that day I went out to lunch at Teany with my roommate Gurj and then headed back home where I spent the afternoon TOASTING ROSE PETALS. I finally figured out that if I put those rose petals in the toaster and bake them for a minute and then let them cool off for another 5 mintues, I'm left with nearly perfect rose petals that don't rot and dry quite nicely. These days, at APT 3A, if you have to use the toaster, you've gotta go into my room. It's kinda silly. My rose toasting ceremony was accented by a delightful visit by Brandon and his girlfriend Lauren bearing Hogaarden beers ("I brought Hogaardens for ... my ho garden."), which I couldn't touch since I was working. Sad. But I guess it's good to know that when left to my own devices I can restrict my indulgences.

Gurj and I met up with the NOY Boy Toys outside of Webster Hall. Brandon, Joe, Joe's girlfriend Jenne, and myself walked the red carpet and got interviewed. I haven't been able to watch the video, sadly, but Brandon said that he and I were the walking equivlent to "Curbed Your Enthusiasm," which means that it's probably cringeworthy to watch, but a trainwreck designed for pure enjoyment. We're more Larry and Jeff than Larry and Cheryl.

There was an open bar downstairs in the greenroom which I indulged in before, after, and during my DJ set. Karen told me that Vodka sodas are calorie and carbohydrate free, so I didn't feel guilty pumping that shit through my veins. By the time NOY took the stage I was sauced up and danced up front with Jenne and friends. After that set Brandon and I attempted to check out the party. I got a little overwhelmed, lost Brandon in the shuffle, and found him back in the greenroom where I got another drink -- which now makes sense... 7 drinks in the night... ok, now i know why i couldn't really last past 12am. I missed the Living Things cause gravity was having it's way with me. I came home and watched Curbed, Degrassi, and sadly missed Death Cab for Cutie and Public Enemy. If there was a power to fight, it was my sobriety.

Yesterday I had the interns come over. I've got two new interns to add to the already fabulous Jordana: Nick and Sasha. I've known Nick from the internet for a couplel years and Sasha is a friend of his. We spent most of the time watching "Degrassi: The Next Generation," listening to demos from bands I fucking love, new oohlas songs, and making those Nightmare of You singles that are the bane of my existance. We managed to make about 30 of them in one day! Holy shit... only 2 dozen more to send out and those things will finally be out of my life. I love NOY. I love those singles. But i'd love my life back!

When 8pm rolled up the interns opted for staying in to watch the OC rather than going to class, going to their own homes, and going wherever else they had to go. I left them to check out a band called Warren Suicide at Rothko. They were a great, possibly german? techno rock trio. Male/Female vocals. I spent the entire time trying out new dance moves and thinking about how cool it must be to be from wherever they're from. Then I went home. I meant to go to Elhaam's birthday party, but my bed needed me.

This morning I had to get up super early to audition for an MTV-U gig. I'm not sure how that went. Probably not too hot since it was early (for me) and outdoors and today is the first freezing fucking cold day of the year. My luck!

Tonight I'm going back to NJ for dinner w/my family then heading over to the Orchard Bar for STOLEN TRANSMISSION! The party has been going so well, and some friends of mine who are playing in Long Island tonight might make a quick visit, which would be nice.

Anyone going to the Across the Narrows show tomorrow? Which one? the Pixies or the Killers? I'm going to be hitting up the Killers one... between them, Interpol, British Sea Power, and Tegan & Sara, it's like my ideal evening. Oh joy!

I love you deeply,
Sarah
TEAR US APART

I recently shot this thing for MTVU called SOUNDTRACK. It used to be that you could only watch MTVU on college campuses, but that's changed. Now you can go to MTVU.com and see all their programming ON DEMAND... Including my "Soundtrack" show! But sadly, this only works for people on PCs (no macs, dunno why). The way to get to it is to go to the site and click on the WATCH NOW button under the giant U on the left of the screen. Choose "Watch MTV U On Demand"... a window will pop up and on the left side you'll see little me under SOUNDTRACK. (you can also click on "all shows" and choose "soundtrack" there.)

There's one segment where I'm hanging out with Nightmare of You in my room... which is the G-Rated Version of what we normally do. There's also a segment where I'm hanging out and DJing with Karen... and I finally notice that I'm REALLY FUCKING SHORT. Holy shit. I need to get platforms ASAP.

WHO LOVES THE SUN?

Someone suggested I mention on here that I will be on the Morning Sedition show on Air America. If you're in the NYC area, you can hear it at 1190AM. I'm appearing LIVE at 7:30 am (or at least that's when the show begins... not sure my exact air time).

When I showed up to my uncle's shiva last week dressed a bit casual, my brother Albert yelled at me about it. I replied "Chill out! I just came from work! Give me a break!" To which one of my cousins replied "You go to work LIKE THAT?" When Albert said I looked like shit, I said "That's because i've been up since 8am!" Yeah... that answer didn't really win much sympathy either.

So, I suppose other folks wake up at really early hours... if you're one of those people, check me out on Air America.

YE OLDE HOME

My old stomping grounds, SPIN, is turning 20! To celebrate this event, they're throwing themselves a killer party that you can get tickets to.

The show's main stage -- hosted by Juliette Lewis -- will feature live performances from Public Enemy, Death Cab for Cutie, LCD Soundsystem, Drive-By Truckers, and Lady Sovereign, plus DJ sets from Afrika Bambaataa, Diplo, DFA, DMC, and the Rub. Tickets are on sale now via TicketWeb.

The Living Things and Nightmare of You, plus a special surprise guest, will appear on the OP Lounge second stage at New York's Webster Hall during Spin's 20th anniversary bash next Wednesday night (Sept. 28). Guest DJs Tommie Sunshine, Ultragrrrl (hey, that's me!), and the Husky Gentleman will be spinning sets throughout the night.

During the event, Spin will conduct a silent auction to benefit the MusiCares Hurrricane Relief Fund. Items include a customized Spin20 Schecter guitar (signed by the show's performers, pictured below); signed and numbered prints of the Spin20 poster (pictured above), designed by renowned artist Shepard Fairey; and other signed memorabilia from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Metallica, Garbage, Interpol, Sting, Fountains of Wayne, and others, plus items from all the performers and DJs. All proceeds from the auction go directly to MusiCares. Spin, Webster Hall, Bowery Presents, and Shepard Fairey have all pledged to donate a portion of the proceeds from Spin20 to MusiCares' fund.

CHARITY BEGINS AT HOME

My buddy Siege's family lost all their belongings in Hurricane Katrina. His gorgeously tragic photos, which you can see here, showcase the devastation the storm brought to the south.

In order to raise money for his family, Seige has an amazing array of items up for auction which you can bid on or check out HERE. If you can't afford the items up for auction, but would like to donate a little, you can still do that via paypal.

Message from Siege:

My mom grew up poorer than poor in New Orleans, in a shotgun shack on McKain Street, with nine people living in three rooms. Christmas was Toys for Tots, dental care was having their teeth removed at Charity Hospital. Through it all they stuck together, and slowly over the course of years managed to work for a slightly better life, even if it was still below the poverty line, or the very shaky bottom rung of middle class. My mom raised me and my little brother alone, working three jobs, and I promised myself I'd take care of her when I could. This March I was finally able to make good on that promise, when I used my life savings to buy her a humble trailer she had fallen in love with in Mississippi, and gave it to her for my birthday. It was the first thing she'd ever owned, aside from junker cars. She named her humble trailer "Eden", and was as happy as I've ever seen her, which is pretty damn happy.

Then Katrina came. Now she's lost it all. The trailer, nestled between Bay St. Louis, MS and Slidell, LA, was submerged under over twenty feet of water when the storm surge came ashore. Thankfully, my mom and little brother were in a shelter in Kiln, and true to form, having volunteered in battered women's shelters and homeless shelters hew whole adult life, my mom spent the four days she was in the hurricane shelter helping the elderly and sick. Yes, I'm saying my mom is a redneck Mother Theresa (in fact, Theresa's her Confirmation name). Anyway, "Eden" has four feet of muck and dead shrimp and carp from Pearl River in it, and it's molding and ruined. My mom's now homeless, squatting in an evacuated home in Slidell. All she's got is the clothing on her back, and a few family photos she managed to grab. My little brother, 13, has nothing for school, and no medication for his asthma.

I'm going down tomorrow to pick her and my little brother up, to bring supplies, and to survey the damage. The rest of my family didn't fare much better. My aunt's home was destroyed, as was my cousin's apartment. So many memories lost, they had so little, and now they have nothing. And my family's just one of thousands just as bad off, if not worse. At least they have their lives.

Anyway, I'm the lucky one, having gotten out of Southern poverty years ago, and now it's all on my shoulders to help them rebuild. It will be a tough job, but I'm tough, and my people are tough. We know now, as always before, we can't count on the government to come to our rescue, or show care, so it's all just friends and family taking care of this business of rebuilding. And we're all friends and family now.

I thank you so much for the love and support, and I swear, when we rebuild my mom's Eden she's going to invite everybody down for a Cajun crawfish boil! It won't be fancy, but it will be fun, and good times will roll again.

WHAT A BEAUTIFUL DREAM

I found this great site that shows you what songs were on the OC. I think i've actually been to that site before, but I had to revisit it when trying to figure out who covered the Neutral Milk Hotel's "In An Aeroplane Over the Sea." It was Matt Pond PA (whom also covered "Wonderwall" i think).

I went to my file sharing service and found a live cover of the song by Dax Riggs.
Give it a listen:

Dax Riggs - In The Aeroplane Over the Sea
FROM EVERY HEART YOU BREAK

This website has camera phone shots of My Chemical Romance and their fans in makeup. They're so cute!

That link came from Lindsay, whom got it from CityRag.

I STILL BELIEVE IN YOU

The other night my friends and I went to Kate's Joint to celebrate the release of my book and to surprise Brian with a belated birthday cake that the multi-talented Leigh made (vegan style!). I was so stoked cause Josh brought a copy of Paper Magazine and while I was browsing the party listings I totally accidently spotted a mention of the Stolen Transmission party: "The truth is that if it werent for this party, we'd declare the whole Ludlow-Orchard Street annex a no-fly zone from thursday through Saturday. It's that good" WOWOWOWOWOWOW!!!!! I nearly spat my beer across the table at Brandon and Geordan and threw the issue at Karen, whom herself hadn't known that the blurb would be written. We couldn't believe it! Thank you Paper Magazine!!!

Topics of the night varied from our parties ("why dont you throw a party to celebrate it" is the new "why don't you blog about it" which was the new "why don't you write a song about it"), the new site that's better than myspace, and Brian bet Elhaam that one of his scummy friend could pick her up using a technique that's they're learning in some weird pick up artist seminar.

Wednesday I went to the shiva.

Thursday morning I went back to the Shiva, came home, worked on singles with my interns, watched the Rape episode of Degrassi: the Next Generation, and went to DJ the Hurricane Benefit with Karen. I love her.

I'M VERY FORGETFUL

I forgot to tell you guys that I would be on Today In New York today. I also forgot to Tivo it. I also forgot to watch it. I also forgot I was even on when my mom called me this morning at an ungodly hour to say how excited she was to see me on tv. She still gets stoked on that stuff. So did my entire family whom all told me about it when I showed up for the Shiva today. It's so nice to know that they're so excited about stuff like this... To be honest, i didn't even know my dad remembered that I made a book.

You can watch me here (I can't get it to work): La Ti Da!

HERE WE ARE

I would like to start off this post by saying thanks to all my friends who have called, emailed, IMed, etc to check up on me. For those who don't read my brother's blog, my uncle David "DeDe" Lewitinn passed away on Saturday morning. He was my father's little brother, and my dad did everything imaginable to help him survive -- including getting him not one, but TWO heart transplants and a triple bypass surgery. His loss was not a shock, but something like that is never easy to deal with. Particularly when I went to the shiva last night and entered the room to hear my dad say "I want my brother back" while doubled over in tears. Anyone whom knows my father knows that he's not one to show any emotion except that of stone coldness. I know thousands of people died in Katrina, but this is closer to home and has effected me personally. So for those who have reached out to give their condolences, thanks.

ON TO THE GOOD NEWS:

A month ago, Fierce Panda in the UK called to see if I wanted to collaborate with them on a single by the band Apartment. Now, apart from being a huge fan of Apartment (They played the Tarts of Pleasure non-CMJ show last year with the Bravery), I am a HUGE fan of Fierce Panda. In fact, Fierce Panda was the inspiration behind my singles label: Stolen Transmission. FP introduced me to some really amazing bands, and pretty much any time i heard that a band had previously released a single on FP, I knew that they were a group I should take notice of... many of them became my favorites. Such as: Placebo, Idlewild, Coldplay, the Polyphonic Spree, and Supergrass.

So it's with great pleasure that I announce the first ever Stolen Transmission collaboration:

STOLEN TRANSMISSION VS. FIERCE PANDA presents...
APARTMENT

You can buy the collaboration single this week exclusively at their shows. Next week you can purchase it on this website (because all the other orders for the Spinto Band and Nightmare of You will have been shipped by then... thank god.)

Tonight Apartment plays at the Mercury Lounge in NYC at 9:30.
Tomorrow they play in Philly at the Khyber with Towers of London.

The tracks on the release are: "Patience is Proving," "Beyond My Control (live)," and "People."

Watch the video for "Patience is Proving"

Back to Hurricane Katrina: The Tarts of Pleasure and Josh Madden will be DJing a benefit this thursday to help victims of the horrible natural disaster. Please come by and help support:

I GUESS WE'LL JUST HAVE TO ADJUST

The Arcade Fire with David Bowie - "Wake Up"
[From Banana Nutrament

I really shouldn't put off blogging for a week. Remembering where i left off is always a task. I think i left off just before the MTVu people came by to film me for a show they're doing about songs that soundtrack your life. I got to have my NOY Boy Toys in there with me, which was fun cause otherwise they'd actually have to leave my house... and perish the thought!

Later, last friday, I met up with BrandonR at the fashion week tents. My delightful friend Faran told me that Alexz Johnson from 'Instant Star' was going to be at a certain fashion show so of course, BrandonR and I HAD to go... just to see her in person. We're such fucking nerds. Sadly, she didn't show up. But BrandonR looked cute and dressed like a Libertine.

Afterwards we went to see the cursed performance of Men, Women, and Children at Tonic. The power kept on escaping them during the set, but that didn't seem to bother the crowd too much -- when the power went out on the instruments and mic for the end of their last song "Dance in My Blood," the entire audience sang the remainder of the song at the top of their lungs. For a situation that could've caused the band to give up, everyone was in fantastic spirits and making the best of it. Plus, MW&C are like a traveling party, so that's pretty easy.

They were so fun that I went to Long Island with BR for their show at the Downtown. I got to meet a bunch of Long Island superstars. Long Island is very much like NJ. The highways look the same. The suburbs look the same. The kids look the same. I guess it's understandable that the scenes are so closely knit.

Sunday I had dinner with Jordana the Intern and her family, whom I love. We went to her Dad's restuarant uptown and he managed to get me drunk with one single martini. I came home to find BR and Ryan watching the Family Guy on my couch, and I jumped into bed and covered my head with my newly fixed blanket. I don't remember if i went out that night or not. Oh wait... I went to 'Stache at 6's and 8's. That was fun.

Monday I took my brother Lawrence to see the sold out a-Ha show at Irving Plaza. They sounded better than I expected and looked just as good. Their set was two hours long (contrary to popular belief, they remained a popular band overseas, releasing several albums with great songs and ground breaking videos), which included "Take On Me" and "The Sun Always Shines on TV." The best part of the evening was when the entire audience sang the ending of "Hunting High and Low"... it was just really sweet and endearing. I was, however, surprised to see the singer use a teleprompter for the lyrics... but if Michael Stipe can pull it off, then so can this dude. No sightings of Chris Griffin from Family Guy.

Tuesday was a super busy day. I went to the Syndicate party at the Downtime to see NOY and Idlewild perform. 'Wild's set was completely packed with songs from their earlier, punkier days, to fit in with the emo heavy crowd. They opened with the Ramones' "I Wanna Be Sedated," quickly winning the hearts of everyone in the room, and despite the intolerable heat in the venue, everyone that was there and sweating from every pore in their body, danced and sang along. This show was like seeing the band when they came out with 100 Broken Windows. I'm going to have to comfort Karen... she started missing the boys the moment the turned around. i don't blame her -- they treat her like a member of the band, practically.

Wednesday I went to the NOY album release show/party in Long Island. I think i'm LI'ed out. No more. Not for a bit... or maybe that's a lie. The boys in Long Island are fucking young, adorable, italian, and did i mention, young?

I'm sorry... I'm getting bored of writing this... so if it seems like i'm giving up... it's cause I pretty much am.

Last night, thursday, i went with Jen C, Scott, Lawrence, and L's friend Kristen, to see the Arcade Fire. Midway through the set I started choking on a piece of gum while talking to Scott. Despite leaning over and grabbing my neck in a "I am choking" method, I don't think Scott realized that I was, infact, choking. Eventually I hacked my gum out, and started to breathe again. You know what was running through my mind as all this was happening? Not "I love my family and friend." Not "I've never known true love." Not "This cant happen to me..." No. What was running through my head was "Wow, how awesome! I always wanted to die while listening to great music! This is perfectly timed!"

I GO WILD

Last night's Idlewild show at Irving Plaza was amazing. I arrived a bit late, and found my buddy Mikey and his girlfriend immediately when I walked in. Mikey was on cloud nine since he's been waiting nearly a month for this show. After dropping off my bags backstage I found Karen, Niki, and Lizzy and we all started dancing non stop. Jumping up and down and screaming every line along with "WE LOVE YOU!!!" The band looked grateful or embarrassed. I'm not sure which.

Afterwards I ran over to Hiro to shoot a segment for MTVu. As I was setting up Jay from Project Runway started approaching followed by Karen. He asked what the cameras were for, we told him, and he quickly became buddies. He's really nice.

Karen and I DJed our standard Tarts fare and drank Lechee martini's by the bus load (they were free... can you blame us?) Our NOY Boy Toys, Ryan and Brandon, came to show their support and offer some body guard service. If those boys had a body guard service it'd be called Charming and Delightful.

After the party Brandon and Ryan came over to crash on the couch and various other places to crash at my pad. We woke up this morning under a layer of feathers. My down comforter exploded somehow and we were all embedded with feathers. When I got out of the shower i found Ryan dutifully sewing up the hole in the comforter so we wouldn't look like we raped pigeons.

I LIKE THIS SONG

We Are Scientists - "Nobody Move, Nobody Get Hurt"
MY BODY IS YOUR BODY

I'm really tired today. I want to snooze. I always want to snooze. Chances are, you will hate this post. You will call me names. You will write mean things about me in my comments section. Chances are, I will care less.

Yesterday, Jordana the Intern came over to help out with the Nightmare of You singles. I'm really happy because she told me that she loves NOY and has been telling all her friends about them. Jordana has pretty impeccable taste in music (and a slight love for the Strokes), so her approval of the band means that my buddies are gonna have a good year.

The NOY Boy Toys came over to visit after Jordana left. It had been less than 3 days since we saw each other and already we missed each other. We hugged and updated each other about the past couple of days. Niki came over to hang out and meet the boys for the first time. She used to be my roommate but moved to London for a bit. She decided that NYC was her true home and moved back and she and Brian got a place together. It's great to have her back.

Niki and I then went to the stellastarr* album release party. It's been a while since i've been to one of those things, so i wasn't sure what to expect, but when I entered the room and found my brother Lawrence standing with my other old roommate Lizzy and featuring a giant red lipstick mark on his cheek, I should've known that good times were ahead. I immediately ordered Lizzy to give me a matching lipstick mark so Lawrence and I could look like brother and sister (... oh wait...).

A lot of old friends were there like Laura, Audrey, Peter, Nora, and smells good Gina (the OG ss* fans!). Even Jenny LSQ and Robby Sheff were in attendance! I was stoked. It's been so long since I've seen those friends and I missed them all. I was delighted to see Thursday (the band) representing and got to catch up with them. I also made sure to cockblock Antony. Ryan Heil came to hang out and we stayed for a drink before heading over to Black & White to meet up with the posse that had migrated there.

We all sat around and some of us girls discussed the single greatest purchase some of us ever made. My friend Lizzy introduced me to my new girl crush named Catherine. Apart from being totally gorgeous, Catherine is very funny. I was 8 sheets to the wind when I was introduced to Catherine and immediately started saying "oh catherin, you are my little gentleman, i want to take you to foggy london town," to which she responded "oh baxter, you are my little gentleman!" The same humor! Amazing.

Everyone went up stairs to the Wiz Kid offices and I stayed behind with Ryan so we could finish our drinks (which i tried to smuggle out, unsuccessfully). We gulped them up, headed up stairs and I saw Jenny from Rilo Kiley standing at the door waiting for her friend. We talked for a while and she looked absolutely amazing. Totally gorgeous. She is in town opening for coldplay and said the tour has been amazing. Then her friend showed up. It was a bearded Conor Oberst. I didn't recognize him and felt like a dolt being like "what's your name?" We then all went upstairs where Catherine was showing Lizzy, Niki, and Rob her Carmen Electra stripper exercize dance moves. "you just missed chris and gwen" said one of my friends. Bummer. But alas, Drew, Fab, Albert, and johnny coldplay were lounging around and most definitely wondering what the fuck i was doing there (i, being a stranger). I hung out with my girls for a bit, Ryan ashed in albert's hands, and I decided that Ryan and i were officially drunk and officially needed to go home, so we hopped in a taxi with Niki and went home to bed.

that's all great and stuff, but today the greatest thing happened...
i was walking on 50th street at 7th Ave and encountered a giant moth that was about 4 inches across and the body was about 2 inches long. i brought it to saftey. it was so fucking awesome.

THERE MIGHT BE SKELETONS IN THE CLOSET...

And flowers in the attic... but everyone knows that Brandon Flowers from the Killers has emerald green eyes.

Also, Idlewild's album Warnings/Promises is out today and really worth getting. Their first and second albums (not including Captain, which even they dont count) are my favorites and this is absolutely up there with them. They're playing tomorrow night at Irving Plaza and then Karen and I are DJing the afterparty at Hiro (which is in the maritime hotel). Please come. It will be fun. The cute lil Scottish boys promised that they'd cut up the rug or something like that. You've been warned.

And now, just because people seem to dig it way more than I ever expected when I DJ this, I thought I'd put the Harvey Danger song "Flagpole Sitta" up for download so you can DJ it also or stick it on a mix tape and be all nostalgic for 1998. To be perfectly honest, HD were pretty underrated in my opinion. Their albums were filled with clever songs that would make any Smiths fan stoked.

READ UP, TURN OFF THE TELLY

I started off replying to a post someone posted in my comments section and then decided i should really just post a new thing cause it's been over a week. Touring was a delight, by the way. I got to live in a bubble for a while. But being sentimental is useless.

anyway, the comment that i was replying to:
"i totally agree w/sluggy. h duff is working all hipster/rocker angles to avoid becoming irrelevant. and "punk rock" is shopping mall cool in 2005. the cheese-ball good charlotte guys produced most of her recent album, for example. and even ultra hispters are buying into it - look at how she's hung out at misshapes and even dj-ed there. do you let hillary duff dj at your party because she's going to drop the fucking jams and freak everybody out, or because you want the press, the repuation for knowing celebs?
the truth is that she's a very pretty corny child star who makes very corny pop music and who can buy herself into some credibility - the nyc kids here seem pretty willing to help her along."

My response... which turned into a rant:
it also turns out that she happens to be a super nice girl as well.

in my family it's not uncommon for 17 year old girls to have 28 year old boyfriends who then become their fiances and then their husbands. i dont see what the bid deal is. In other countries there would be no age issue. America has an interesting way of holding down kids from being adults asap (drinking laws, sex laws, voting laws, etc).

when you're treated as an adult from a young age you act like an adult.

also, as far as djing goes... it's not like i'm the most talented dj either. there's no understandable reason why people come to see me dj. but they do. and i appreciate that. so there's really no difference betweeen me and duff, really. we have the same taste in music. when she djed, she played basically what i would've played.

fuck all this bullshit anyway. tens of thousands of people fucking died in Louisiana and more are living through hell. a fucking horror movie brought to life. they're seeing things i could never even begin to imagine. who the fuck cares who has cred. who sold records. who is hanging out with whom. whom is dating whom. fuck all that fucking bullshit. fuck this. fuck that. fuck the word fuck. i hate myself more than ever for not having any money to send to the cause. i'm scouring my room looking for shit to sell. blankets to give. clothes to donate. anything. i'm worthless. i'm useless. i've done nothing but cried in horror when imagining what's going on. i have friends who are missing loved ones. i have loved ones who are missing friends. and here i am in my fucking room, watching vh1, finding a refuge from cnn on the internet. FUCKING REFUGE? for me? what? from the beautiful day outside? from the friends calling to hang out? fuck me. i suck.

MIAMI VICE

I'm in Miami right now soaking in the ... humidity. Ron Perry has become my Josh/Brandon stand-in for the weekend, which is totally fucking awesome because Ron Perry is really fucking wonderful. He always manages to find the cutest blond at the party to make out with... which is something those other homos i hang out with never do. Just kidding, i love homos. I also want to say how excited I am to get hate mail from you all in regards to that last sentence.

Lastnight I DJed the Revolver party at Pawn Shop, and I can't express to you my delight when I saw Merlin Bronques there. Seeing him makes me feel at home, and seeing the Miami kids clutter to have their photo taken by him was amazing. Check them out!

Today we went to some Yahoo! party that Good Charlotte were hosting and I saw that guy from Entourage that plays Eric (Kevin Connelly) with a very pretty and blonde Niki Hilton there. Pharrell was also there, in his underwear, taking photos with scantily clad models. I spent most of the party hanging out with Josh's brothers which was really nice since I only knew one of them well. I fucking love that whole family, and hope to make them my own one day... it already feels like I have.

Right now, Ron and I are at the MTV Hotel (I'm updating this blog from the lobby) and we're about to get some sushi. I'm hoping it'll be really good since we're on the ocean and everything. Then we're going to do TONS of Heroin because it's not poisoned down here like it is on the Lower East Side. Ah sweet unpoisoned bliss. I'm kidding by the way. Please know that.

Tonight I'm going to go to the SPIN/Kanye West party at the Shore Club and then I'm DJing the BAMmies (Bam Margera's party) at the Opium Garden with Kill Hannah. Josh's brother Benji might be joining me on the decks for a bit.

Sunday... what the fuck am I doing on sunday? I guess I'm going to the Killers/Fallout Boy party and then the My Chemical Romance/Greenday party. I DEFINITELY will not be at the VMAs because i will DEFINITELY be hungover.

Monday i'm heading to Orlando to have a reunion with my NOYBOYS. I miss them so much. I want to be surgically attached to Brandon so he never leaves my side. I'll have him on one side, and Josh on the other. It'll be like a hot, sexless, pointless, porn.

I love you,
Sarah

AMAZING

Karen and I have left our party in good hands:

FEED THE WORLD... CANDY

Vice did a great parody of "Do They Know it's Christmas Time" with Halloween featuring:
Karen O
Beck
The Arcade Fire
Sonic Youth
Smoosh

and more!

It's pretty funny, and as per usual, Karen O's voice sounds fucking gorgeous.

I SWEAR THIS IS NOT A FANSITE

But I am a fan...

Check out the new eCard from Nightmare of You.

It features their first single "I want to be buried your backyard" which they just shot a video for on Shelter Island (thanks again to DJ Reiter for helping me figure out the bus system and shit). The video is adorable and takes place at this beautiful place with a lake and trees and nature. We all spent the day running around, drinking beers and blessing the grass under our ass. At the end of the shoot we all jumped into a pool in our underwear and laughed at each others lame undies. Our friend Jordan Silver styled the shoot and the boys looked amazing... they also found a few ticks on their bodies afterwards, so here's to hoping that they dont have lyme disease.

I'm leaving for Miami tomorrow. This hurricane makes me wonder if I'll be the only one there. A lot of the bands are playing this weekend at Reading/Leeds and will be flying into Miami on saturdaynight/sunday morning. It will really suck for MTV if half their rock performers are stuf in England instead of on the red carpet.

Monday I'll be meeting up with the Nightmare boys in Orlando, then Tampa then the sweet Carolinas. We want to DJ parties... so if you know where we can party, please drop me a shout on the party line: sarahlewitinn@tmail.com

SNORZ

It's 3:08pm and the NOYboys are still fast asleep. On a typical tuesday I have Jordana the intern come in and we sit around working on stolen transmission singles and watching tv... but today I'm letting the boys have their day off spent in a silent snoozefest. Apparently, i have quite possibly the most comfortable couch in lower manhattan, and brandon refers to my apartment as the black hole... once you're sucked in, it's hard to leave. He's right. I never want to leave and I hardly like having any sort of social interactions that require me to leave my apartment for longer than an hour.

On friday, I'll have to buck it up. I'm headed to Miami for the VMAs. I might be DJing on friday at the pawn shop for some Debbie Harry event and then saturday I'm djing with Kill Hannah for the BMAs (Bam Margera's party). Sunday are the VMAs (i'm still on the fence about going). Monday i'm flying to Orlando to meet up with Nightmare of Jews and then driving up to NYC with them. We're making a stop in Tampa, so i better see Chris Drama there.

All this out of apartment time will make me appreciate sitting at home and watching TV more.

When i do leave the house, it's for good reasons:

Friday was the stolen transmission party at orchard bar. We had a total blast, as always. I guess right now would be a good time for me to tell you all that the Tarts of Pleasure are going on vacation. We'll be back at the Orchard Bar on September 16 where we'll be throwing the Unofficial Sponge Afterparty. A simple phonecall could make it the OFFICIAL sponge party, but then it's not funny anymore.

Saturday night I DJed at Misshapes with My Chemical Romance's Mikey and Gerard Way. When I was younger, Mikey and I would go to TisWas every weekend and we'd dance to brit pop and obsess over blur and oasis and definitely radiohead. I guess people think that emo bands only listen to emo, cause they were shocked by the amount of brit pop and over all amazing music that mikey and g-rad were having me throw down.

There was an incident with some freaky, over eager goth girl who was beyond creepy. She was just kinda lurking in a very personal space invader kind of way. Some of us tried to ease her away from Gerard (who didn't even notice her apart from when she asked him if he wanted to take a drag of her cigarette... the girl was super fucking creepy), and when that didnt work, MCR's manager, Brian, had to ask her to leave the area. I found her at the bar crying into a glass of red wine... her tears literally falling into the glass. I felt bad, but remained slightly cautious of her.

Moments passed and she was back, hovering by Gerard and hanging onto the glass that separates the dj booth from the dance floor. I started to get freaked out. She stood about 3 feet from him crying. Anyone that knows Gerard knows that he's incredibly sweet to his fans ... but people kept this one away, and with good reason. After her creepy level went through the roof, Brian had to have her escorted out. She dropped to the floor and started to have convulsions and freaking out. She was promptly thrown from the club. As I was leaving, she tried to enter the club again, saying that she had to go in there to get cigarettes. When the doorman turned her away, she dropped to the floor and freaked out. An ambulance was called and the girl was taken away by paramedics who had to strap her down (by the way, they were not told about her creepy factor... she was just totally out of control). People think she was on acid, i think she was just batshit insane.

Overall, thoguh, the night was really fucking wonderful. The boys had fun (who would've thought they'd see the day when Gerard would be dancing in a DJ booth to Madonna, or MIkey leading people to sing Journey's "Dont Stop Believing"?) and everyone danced and were happy. Yay.

Sunday I went to Brunch with Jordana the Intern and her awesome mom Amy at Pastis. I love hanging out with those two soo much.

After brunch went to Kate's Joint for the birthday party of the future love of my life, Josh. He ordered so much food that people (well, me) were threatening to go into the bathroom to purge so they could continue binging. Ellen brought her dog and I tried to eat it.

Everyone loves Josh. Plain and simple. Anyone that has ever met him has become smitten with his kindness and generosity and overall wonderfulness. I am so thankful to have him in my life. I'm so lucky to have him be a part of me, and me a part of him. I'm so lucky that his mom made it with his dad and made him. yay!

DON'T LET ME BE CARRIED AWAY

If there's something to thank a person for, music is one of them. Karen is one person I owe endless fruit baskets to. That girl has turned me onto more bands than anyone apart from my brother Lawrence.

Right now I owe endless thank yous to BrandonR for finally being able to turn me onto Elliott Smith. Yes, Elliott Smith. Welcome to 6 or 7 years ago, Sarah.

Back in 1999 I went to see Elliott and had a really bad experience with someone that turned me off to him. Everytime I listened to him I thought about this bad experience and couldn't detach the two. I convinced myself that he was overrated. So dumb. Even after reading that great piece in SPIN a few months back, I couldn't bring myself to listen to him.

But then, about a week ago, BrandonR decided that I had to listen to an Elliott Smith song or two. He thought carefully about what to play me and chose the song that he had been singing on and off for the past hour: "Pretty (Ugly Before)".
"i felt so ugly before. i didnt know what to do."

I sat on my couch, stoned and focused. When that was over he declared "I want to play another one for you," and stuck "King's Crossing" on. I recognized that one since I remembered how in the Spin article the writer wrote about how Elliott's sister and girlfriend sang a line on that song and immediately after reading that I listened to that one song only once or twice.
"Give me a reason not to do it."
"Because we love you!"

I know I'm so late on this. I know it's so lame that i'm JUST NOW DISCOVERING HOW GENIUS Elliott was. But I guess it's better late than never, right?

I FEEL WEIRD

tATu is back and they're no longer lesbians (I think one got pregnant, acutally, and had a kid). No, they're definitely not.

Thank you Thighmaster for this video.

Watch tATu play killer Russian prostitutes.

Wow. See you on TRL... or not.
LA FOLK ARE SO LUCKY

2 QUESTIONS:

1. Does anyone have a contact over at Zima? Yes, the malt bevvy that you, like myself, experienced your first drunken night with in middle/high school. Ideally someone in their marketing department. Are they even still around? Please advise!

2. Does anyone know who represents the band Sponge?

thank you and good night.

PANIC ON THE STREET OF RIVINGTON

This morning, BrandonR, Ryan, and myself tried to get breakfast at Teany. When the three of us approached Ludlow we saw that it was a full on police scene. We shrugged, hoped that nothing serious happened, and then went our respective ways.

When I got into my office I recieved an email from BrandonR telling me that there was tragically a murder at Teany To-Go. We all know people who work there, so we're all really nervous and scared. I'm not sure what prompted the murder or how it occured. All I know is that I'm really sad for the person who died and their families. There's nothing that one can say to make this news any less tragic or sad. Nothing.

I was also told about more deaths due to a bad batch of drugs, and thank my lucky stars that there's nothing harder than pot going into my body, and even that is going to end soon as per my brother's request. But six deaths have happened in the past week due to a bad batch of either heroin or cocaine (i think it was the H-bomb), and there was some huge crackdown in williamsburg.

When I found out that people were doing heroin again I became a bit confused. Wasn't that very ten years ago? Didn't we learn from those mistakes? Don't people do pain killers now instead?

But no matter...

What I'm trying to get at is: If ever there was a time/reason to NOT DO DRUGS - knowing there's a poisoned batch floating around might be it.

My thoughts are with those who knew the person who got murdered at Teany and the families who lost loved ones due to drugs in the past week.

DIRECTIONS?

Anyone reading this know the best way to get from NYC to Shelter Island on a day like today?

thanks!
HEY ALISTER!

As I sat behind my laptop fastidiously trying to find the song from the commercial I just saw, BrandonR turned to me and said:
"You do realize that we might be superfans. You and I. This is it. We're 'Instant Star' superfans."
"Shhhh!" I said, "Pause Degrassi, I found that song!"

We had previously watched the episode promo twice to hear Jude perform her totally acoustic-Hole-like performance, and after each watching, Brando and I high-fived each other. I am so stoked, I thought that episode's song was going to be "Your 21." For Instant Star fans, I think this one is better than the mashup she did with S-to-the-H-to-the-A-to-the-Y.

Instant Star Alexz Johnson - Skin
Instant Star Alexz Johnson - "Waste My Time" (the Jude and Shay mashup)

Also, totally off topic, but just a bit of a fashion tip for boys --

A couple of months one of my friends asked me to pick up a specific pair of pants for him at H&M. He told me to pick up as many I could find in his size and that he would pay me back when I gave them to him the next time he was in NYC.

A day or two later when Josh called me while I was shopping at H&M, he asked me what I was looking for and i told him: Slightly shiney, tapered black pants from H&M with the PINK label... women's pants.

"Oh, I have two pairs of those that will be his size. You can give mine to him. I gave a pair to my brother. They're great." (Yes, Josh is sooo giving that he would give someone a pair of pants that he loves because they want them. I've literally seen him give the shirt right off his back to someone who liked it. I am so lucky to have him in my life.)
"Thanks, but I think he'll want new ones."
"Then you have to go to the H&M on Lexingon and 50th or something. I think they're the only ones who carry it."

After that, everytime I assist one of my guy friends in shopping, those are always the pants i look for, and those are always the pants that get bought. So boys with skinny legs... go find those!

BROTHER LAWRENCE CRIED FOR YOUR SINS

My Brother, Lawrence, has gone emo. Bromo? That can work in two ways. I have Bromos.

I had something written here, but my brother called me and told me how my story was very similar to someone else's -- and i actually like the other person who told me the story... and i guess it didn't actually make that much of a dent in my brain since i totally forgot about the story until he reminded me while I was out in the country and away from a computer to change the entry and save face. sorry.

anyway... while i'm not about to go back to that bar and find that boy who likes really fresh sushi (though, maybe he'll recognize himself on here ... hi!... i guess that when I was 4 I peed my pants cause I hated peeing. i thought imperfect people peed.

I'm glad that when I came home it was to the boys in my life that love animals. The ones who have proven that they can be selfless and unconditionally loving to something that relies on them.

BLOOD ON THE DANCEFLOOR

I've fallen in love. In love with a song. We're going to live a morose life together in the English countryside and make little babies who are as sad as the gray skies above their heads. Ahh… the Editors' "Munich". We will live a happy life together… or at least a happy month together before I find something else to obsess over.

Speaking of obsessions… sick obsessions... I'm still obsessed with the Nightmare of You album. Since the single is sold out on my end, I don't think the band will mind too much if I post the A-Side, "My Name is Trouble." The song is a hit if I ever heard one. Fuck it being a hit, the song is FUCKING GREAT. And if any of the b-sides wind up on the web, I wont be bummed cause they're so good. I want them to be heard by all!

Nightmare of You – "My Name is Trouble"

If you come to the Orchard Bar tonight for Stolen Transmission, you'll hear that song…download it so you can sing along with me and Karen.
(Orchard bar is on 200 Orchard street (corner of Houston) in the Lower East Side … Karen and I DJ from 1-4am).

I have no energy to write about the bands I saw this week, but I'll tell you that the highlights were:
Five O'Clock Heroes
Army of Me (holy shit)
MC Chris

IT PLAYS ON AND ON AND ON

Right about now, a bunch of people may have recieved their Nightmare of You single. What do you all think?! I'm obsessed with the B-sides.
THE SAND IS GREENER ON THE OTHER SIDE

I'm not posting this to make a political statement. I'm posting this because I think it's cool.

Secretive "guerrilla" artist Banksy has decorated Israel's controversial West Bank barrier with satirical images of life on the other side.

Also, apparently the password for the Bauhaus show in NYC is: Bela

THE JETSET LIFE IS GOING TO KILL YOU

Hey Floridians - What's the best way to get from Miami/Ft. Lauderdale to Orlando? Is there a bus or a train or some sort of easy transportation to take? Like, can you hope on a boat in Miami that looks like Mickey Mouse and take off? Please let me know. Thanks! By the way, this means that I'll be joining the Nightmare of You/Vandetta Red tour in Orlando, and up through to NYC if anyone wants to see the bands play, take us out, buy us dinner, ask us to DJ, etc.
OH BROTHER

My newly svelt older brother, Lawrence has revamped and updated his blog. Now it's more personal and focuses on the day-to-day rather than the world at large and I gotta say, I definitely dig it more. The other stuff was good, but way over my little head at times. I'm happy to see him back to blogging.

THE FIRST RULE OF FIGHT CLUB

I watched this without the sound on so I can't back their music, but Idiot Pilot's video for "A Day in the Life of a Poolshark" is graphically brutal and pretty impressive. I love it.
YOU LOOK LIKE SNOOPY AND IT MAKES ME SMILE

The Nightmare of You single sold REALLY WELL and so I had to stop selling it momentarily so I could process all the requests. Thanks for your understanding! As for the orders already made, please expect them in the next week or two.

Thanks!
Sarah
BUMMER!

Brandon from Nightmare of You had to get emergency wisdom teeth extraction today so NOY had to drop out of their tour until (probably) August 10. Such a bummer. Here's to hoping that he gets well soon and saves me some painkillers.

On a lighter note, I went to Tenafly today to clear out what's left of my bedroom since my parents just moved. I found these great old school portraits, class photos, and an old letter I sent ot my friend Ali during the summer of 93 where I told her about my summer exploits. I will share it for you now (gramatical errors and all):

Dear Ali,
How are you sorry I didnt get a chance to write you my camp has kept me so busy. I went out with two boys this summer, one the first week the secondboy the 3rd week. The 1st boys name was Noah he was exactly 1 foot taller than me. I didn't really like him but I felt bad for him so I went out with him. He was the worst kisser not only did he bite but he almost swalled me. The second boys name was Boaz. He used to go out with Catt but she dumped him. He was a little better of a kisser than Noah but he to bit. Ilyssa and Catt dumped him for me yesterday. Disney World was awesome. So was the hotel. Did you go out with any one in camp? When you get back we've got to do something together but not going to town I'm kind of sick of town but if you want to go I'll go. Well I got to go. Love Sarah.

My mom and brother laughed their asses off when I read this to them. My brother was a bit freaked out that i was kissing boys when i was 13 and my mom thought my description of kissing was hilarious. They also were amused to hear that I had two "boyfriends" in the summer and had my friends dump the second one. 13 year olds can be ruthless.

ADDED: I forgot to add that when looking at a class photo from nursery school my brother asked me in a voice mocking me at age 3 or 4 "Where's BENJIIIIIIIII? BENJIIIIIII!!!!!"
I replied "How do you remember Benji?"
He said "You used to talk about him all day long 'MY BOYFRIEND BENJIIIIII MY BOYFRIEND! MY BOYFRIEND!!!!!!' when you were in nursery school."
"Oh my God! I can't believe you remember that. He and I used to kiss in the back of class during recess. I have no idea what his name is or where he is now."

One day I'll scan in that photo -- which has been colored on by me with marker -- and maybe i'll find Benji. The following year in school, my boyfriend's name was Matt Aronoff. We also used to sit in the back of class kissing, which freaked out our friend Jarod. I remember telling Jarod that he had to find someone that he loved to kiss. About 12 years later Matt started going out with my best friend in high school, Dalia. Anyway, it's nice to know that I haven't actually changed a bit since then. I'm still making out with boys, but instead of it being in the back of a nursery school classroom during recess, it's in the back of a club at misshapes.

By the way, this post was inspired by Rob Hitt's website. Please check it out.

NEED YOU TONIGHT?

I rarely, rarely, rarely go to the Velvet Rope message boards because they're filled with bitter folks who don't like ANYTHING. Nothing. I have yet to see them like something. That's not my style, so I stay far, far, far away.

But today I got bored and curiosity got the best of me and so I went over and found this thread called INXS: THE SCAM

In it, someone posted:
"I have been holding back for a while, but I can't take it anymore!!

I was one of the final 50 selected to go to LA for the final round for the INXS:Rockstar show. I wrote a journal about my experience and described all 50 contestants I saw when I was there. From day one we were told 14 people make it to the show...14...14...14...14!!! I have contracts to prove this. Anyway, all of sudden the show airs and there are 15 contestants...go figure! I recognize all of them, except one...MIG! He WAS NOT at the audtions. I promise you!!

So I came to realize, Mig is the mole..the plant if you will. INXS probably recorded the album with him already, though that I can't prove.

Check this out: One of the songs we were given to learn was "We Are The Champions"...then it was pulled. They changed it. Could it be because MIG was the lead in the London production of 'Queen: We Will Rock You'? A Broadway type show. And isn't the TV show supposed to be about guys and girls who are struggling to make a career out of singing?? MIG has a career...go figure!!

The icing on the cake was tonight. Great reality setup. One guy slaughters a Queen tune last week..then Mig comes in to show he can save the day and really sing a Queen song...go figure!!
He has been singing them for a living!!!

Anyway, if you are a betting man...call Vegas and get the odds on Mig. You walk away a rich man/woman...trust me!!

It's just disapponiting to know the band is using this program to jusat market themselves and a singer they have already selected. The auditions were really to surround MIG. Pretty sad..."
YOU'VE GOT: LAME

My friend Tanya sent me AIM Fight last week and I had yet to find a worthy opponant until today.

I was in the top 5% of people using AIM. I'm not sure what that means exactly, but it sounded impressive.

No matter what name I put in there, I won. Not only did I win, but I demolished my opponants. Victorious!

Then I got bored. So I entered in my friend Brandon's IM name, and found he was only 10,000 less than me. That might not sound like a lot, but my number was 56,000 and his was like 45,000. Again, I have no idea what all this means. So then I thought, "hmmm... who would have more IM buddies than Brandon? A ha! Crobin!" So I put in Crobin's name and he slayed me. He won. Crobin is a winner.
UM... RULES!

I don't know what the original source of this was because I got the link from a message board, but if you liked playing the game called Paperboy on Nintendo, then you will fucking love this version done by real folks.

JELLYBEAN, YOU COULD NEVER COMPREHEND THE INTELLECT OF HER MIND

Giant Magazine explains all the fuss behind the awesomeness of Joy Division.

Also, my Prom date Mikey Epstein, sent me this article called How To Find a Jewish Boyfriend. Evidently he's been speaking to my mom or something.

And to keep you entertained and me humbled...

Ultragrrrl: i thought "gall" meant "nerve"... like "you have some nerve"
Ultragrrrl: "he had the gall to call."
KarenPlusOne: doesnt it?
Ultragrrrl: oh, it does!
Ultragrrrl: i didnt scroll all the way down.
KarenPlusOne: hahahaha
KarenPlusOne: i can just see you taking the SATs.. like, picking B because you didnt realize there were 2 other choices
Ultragrrrl: hahahaha
Ultragrrrl: i did so bad on the SATs cause the day before i cut my hair COMPLETELY OFF. imagine it was longer than it is now and i cut it like as short as wynona ryder's hair in "girl iterrupted" but maybe a wee bit longer in the front.
Ultragrrrl: so i spent the whole time wondering if i looked good
Ultragrrrl: and was like "oh, yeah, important test in front of me!"
KarenPlusOne: HAHAHAHAHA
KarenPlusOne: i just remember drinking way too much coffee that morning and my hands wouldnt stop shaking
KarenPlusOne: i thought i was a drug addict
AVRIL MEETS MORE AVRIL

If I had guilty pleasures, The-N would be my number one source for it. Between "Degrassi: The Next Generation" and "Instant Star" and the creators/producers/writers affinity to naming the episodes after songs, I am so stoked every friday night. Karen can't get me out of the house and to Orchard bar until I've watched both shows (which are tivoed cause i'm usually eating shabbat dinner with my family while it's on).

I love "Instant Star." It's all sugar. The characters are hilarious, but relatable in a sort of Nickelodeon version of "My So-Called Life." And the main character's love instest, Shay, is too much for my eyes when he comes on screen. He's gorgeous.

Now that I work in the same building at The-N i want to sneak onto their floor and try to steal whatever shwag i can find.

Listen to "Waste My Time".

Also, in one of the episodes, Jude's best friend whose name i cant remember, said to this former boy band guy "While you were on stage shaking your ass, jude and i were locked up in our rooms listening to sonic youth and writing songs that could change the world."

Whenever someone posts on here that i'm "destroying music" i recall that line from that episode and think "what a bunch of fucking douchebags."
IT'S NOT YOU ITS THE E TALKING

I nearly died when I saw this scene in Family Guy of Peter Griffin on E. Basically, imagine Brian the Dog as Brandon, Stewie as his cat Bella, and me as Peter.

Go here to hear about 39 different versions of Soulwax's "E Talking".

Also, I just want to talk about Soulwax for a minute... I first heard about the band from Belgium when they went on tour in 1998 or 1999 with Muse in the UK. Muse had a knack for finding amazing bands to take on tour with them (Coldplay opened up for them early on, for example), so I blindly decided to pick up the Soulwax record Much Against Everyone's Advice. It was complex, layered, and amazing along the lines of Beck's earlier work, but more streamlined and uh... Belg. The band later became really fucking famous as the DJ duo 2ManyDJs, which was great cause they were racking the $$ faster than with their Almo Sounds record. But i can't urge it enough... please download whatever music you can find from MAEA. Every song on there is good.

BLOGGING WHILE INTOXICATED

This morning when I was heading to work with Karen (we dont work together but we walked/woke/boke together) and I said "holy shit, i think last night i posted a photo of brandon, ryan, and joe on my blog with nothing written. just their photo. I cant be given my computer when i'm drunk."

So that would explain the post below. The other posts of my buddies... well, it's easier than writing and a picture tells a thousand words. I am having a lot of fun with my friends. we laugh nonstop. also, a lot of NOY fans have been checking out the blog cause of the single and i figured it'd be fun for them to see the process that it's created. i sound apologetic. i shouldn't apologize.

Last night I went with the NOY boys and a couple of their friends to dinner at Nobu. It was my first time there and the food was really fucking great, at least I think it was. By the time my food got to me I was already 2.5 sheets to the wind and dying of laughter. We were all so loud that we ended up sending two glasses of champagne to the table next to us and i think we were the last ones to leave. Our waitress recognized me from tv and I tried to get a free bottle of sake out of it, but I was unsuccessful, I think. I'm not sure really. I was bombed by that point. I don't even remember eating the last two pieces of salmon sushi i ordered or anything else. I was stoked though, cause brandon's best friend brian is in brand new so i got to geek out momentarily and be like "dude, your band is FANTASTIC." I think. Once again, I'm not sure.

I'm fairly certain everyone wound up at my house last night because I have photo graphic evidence and there were people sleeping on my floor in the morning.

I'm sitting at my desk at work now. I'd rather be hugging Josh.

I also need this in my life:

This is the Editor's song "Blood." When Karen DJed it at an Interpol after party, interpol came up to her and asked if it was them:
Editors - "Blood"
SO FUCKING CUTE!

PASS ME THE PEAS AND EMOTION

Despite what some people say, I'm not emo. Sure, I sometimes say shit like "you're a sandcastle i want to destroy" (the more agressive version is: "you're a Jonathan Antin haircut I want to pull and cum on") for no reason whatsoever, but that doesn't make me emo. It makes me destructive. Not self-destructive, which is the saving grace keeping me from being emo.

Anyway, I'm going through some unnamed songs on my iTunes and naming them before brunch and I came across one of my favorite songs of all time: "Tears of a Clown" by Smokey Robinson. Listening to it again, I realized that it's the first SUPER-EMO ballad ever. Black people didn't only create rock'n'roll, they also created Emo. Who knew?

Check out this gem:

Tears Of A Clown

Lyrics: Smokey Robinson
Music: Stevie Wonder, Hank Cosby

Now if there's a smile on my face
It's only there trying to fool the public
But when it comes down to fooling you
Now honey that's quite a different subject
But don't let my glad expression
Give you the wrong impression
'Cause really I'm sad, oh I'm sadder than sad
Well I'm hurt and I want you so bad
Like a clown I appear to be glad, ooh yeah

Chorus
Well they're some sad things known to man
But ain't too much sadder than
The tears of a clown when there's no one around
The tears of a clown when there's no one around

Now if I appear to be carefree
It's only to camouflage my sadness
And honey to shield my pride I try
To cover this hurt with a show of gladness
But don't let my show convince you
That I've been happy since you
Decided to go, oh I need you so
Look I'm hurt and I want you to know
For others I put on a show

[chorus]

Just like Pagliacci did
I try to keep my surface hid
Smiling in the crowd I try
But in a lonely room I cry
The tears of a clown
When there's noone around

Now if there's a smile on my face
Don't let my glad expression
Give you the wrong impression
Don't let this smile I wear
Make you think that I don't care
Cos really I'm sad

THIS IS A STOLEN TRANSMISSION MISSION

Lastnight I had a sleepover after the Stolen Transmission Orchard Bar party. It was just me, BrandonR, Karen, Leigh, and Sean Dack Attack. We piled in here at around 4:30am and managed to only get through half an episode of "Curb Your Enthusiasm" before Brandon had his head on a pillow on my lap, Karen had her head on a pillow on Brandon's hips, Leigh was passed out behind a door, Sean was semi awake and smoking a cigarette next to Leigh, and I was passed on on the coner of my couch. By the time morning rolled in, my roommate Brian was already about to leave the house for Korea.

We amazingly were not completely useless the whole day. After picking up food at Teany (which we ate back at mine), and watching more brain-numbing TV, Leigh declared that she wanted to help me out by making some Nightmare of You singles (i think she was inspired by me saying "holy shit! 20 more singles sold overnight... this is gonna take forever to make!).

Now, the NOY singles are incredibly intricate to make. They're covered in real-life rose petals that are either applied while the flowers are still fresh or dried. Last night I picked up 10 dozen roses, plucked them all, and put them in a tub. There was no way i could wait for them all to dry. Leigh's interest in arts&crafts couldn't have been better matched.

Here is Leigh making some of the singles:

This is Karen and Brandon watching TV:

This is Sean watching something on TV over Leigh's head:

Then I delegated some help from Brandon, so this is him making the cover cards:

This is a closeup of Brandon writing them up:

After a few hours of doing this (and finally completing 25 cd artworks), Josh came over to hang out and bring me a super awesome necklace that he bought me. Everyone finally decided to go home so they could shower and Josh decided to take a nap on my couch.

This is Josh waking up from a nap:

I'M SENDING YOU THIS POST

Holy shit. i just compiled the numbes... i dont want to share them all, because i dont have the spinto band here with me to give permission... but brandon from nightmare of you is over and he said it's ok for me to say how much they sold... 199 copies in 4 days! holy shit. we're almost on the second pressing in only a couple days! it took me 4 weeks (if not more) to sell that many louis xiv singles. WOWZERS. Thanks Absolutepunk.net!

These photos were just taken right now...

Here is Brandon and Jordan celebrating Jordan's birthday and the face brandon is giving me is to convince me to not take down the link for the ep sales:

This is what the NOY single looks like... it's sitting on top of a bed of roses.

This is Jordan's girlfriend Feng-Feng (Fun-Fun), and Jordan's roommate Obediah:

This is Karen

And just for fun, this is a photo that Brian took of Jordan spoon feeding Brandon some cereal:
LIKE, TONIGHT

Wow. Last night I was sitting on my couch with Jordana the intern when I opened up my PayPal account and saw the number of CD sales for the Spinto Band and Nightmare of You. I started shivering and lost my breath. I called Brian into the room and told him my sales. He couldn't believe it. Thanks to everyone who ordered. I'm truly honored that you would order them. I will also become truly broke since they're all so expensive to produce, but TOTALLY worth the time.

Anyway, here's the tarts fun for tonight;

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JORDAN SILVER

Today is Jordan's 22nd birthday. He's almost getting too old for me to date, but I love him anyway.

DON'T LET THEM KNOW YOU'RE A FAN

Karen and I were depleting our brain cells last night at her house before going over to Greg.K's for LoveLeigh's birthday when we sat down for a frank discussion. The topic? Nightmare of You. We are simply shocked by how much we love this album. Truly, shocked. We haven't felt this strongly about a new band since the Killers, and it feels great. We sat there quoting lyrics to each other, cooing over how wonderful the album is, wondering how long it'll be before others pick up on it and embrace it. I hope it's soon.

On another note, I'm not the biggest OK Go fan, but their new video is Hilarious.

I'M YOUR BIGGEST FAN

Holy shit, is the Nightmare of You album good. Karen and I finally admitted to each other that we feel the same way about this one as we felt about the Killers album, and, well, you know what happened there.

I'm putting their single, and the Spinto Band's single, on sale today. in a few minutes. I've been getting an overwhelming amount of emails from NOY fans asking for their single... it's coming!

Gesus, NOY is just so good it's really silly. Really, really, really silly.

And in other awesome Stolen Transmission news... check out what the LA Alternative Press said about The Oohlas:

The OOHLAS
For two years, the Oohlas have been layering Kim Deal vocals and Pixie-like haze over music that swims from the purest jangle pop over to downtrodden psych rock. The trio (composed of Ollie Tamale and Mark and Greg Eklund) offers music that embodies solitary moments like an empty city street at dawn — calm but full of latent possibility. New York City blogger Sarah Lewitinn (AKA Ultragrrrl) picked up the Oohlas on her singles label, Stolen Transmission, selling the 3-song EP on her site so quickly she could barely keep up with demand. Sure, it’s just the internet, but keep in mind Stolen Transmission counts Louis XIV among its alums. But being short on hometown devotion hasn’t daunted the insistent Oohlas. With a couple of write ups in the British bastion of undiscovered, New Music Express (NME), and radio play across Europe, the Oohlas sound the big-in-U.K. cliché as well and loudly as any fish ‘n’ chip munching Brit. Fortunately, the Oohlas have yet to head off into the European sunset yet, giving those stateside a chance to fix the transatlantic imbalance. Catch their full-of-frivolity live show July 29 at The Echo, where you’ll be transfixed by their serene and sparkling rock. (Catherine Addock)

I LOVE YOU

Ollie and Bug:

GET THE FUCK OOOT

Can we please discuss something totally important: Degrassi High.

Tonight's episode was called Love Will Tear Us Apart.

Karen turned me onto this show when the new season started and I have been obsessed with it ever since. Not only this show, but also Instant Star. How do these Canadians make such great teenaged shows?

Friday Nights? They Go There.

I’M JUST A CROSS HAIR

Now Playing:
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - In This Home on Ice
The Editors - Blood (thanks Adi for that one!)

How is it possible that I totally forget nearly everything in my life these days (don’t answer that Karen or Rob)? Not just appointments but spans of time. The other day someone asked me if I had fun on Monday night. What the fuck was Monday night? I still don’t remember but I think it had something to do with me hanging out with BrandonR on my couch and talking about how cool shit can be. I believe Karen was involved in this, as was Jordan since he’s usually at my house (or waiting at my doorstep, or sitting on my couch) everyday by 7pm.

I just had to IM Karen, aka the working side of my brain, to remind me:
Ultragrrrl: what did we do on monday night?
Ultragrrrl: is that when jordan and feng-feng and brandon came oveR?
KarenPlusOne: hahahaha
KarenPlusOne: um
KarenPlusOne: yes
KarenPlusOne: i came over after the vaux show
KarenPlusOne: you vacuumed
KarenPlusOne: allegedly
Ultragrrrl: I DID.
Ultragrrrl: did you not notice?
Ultragrrrl: and then what?
KarenPlusOne: i went home
Ultragrrrl: didnt i go somewhere?
KarenPlusOne: yeah, was that the boat night?
Ultragrrrl: OH RIGHT. the frying pan.
KarenPlusOne: yes
KarenPlusOne: (as in , yes!)
Ultragrrrl: I went there with brian. we didnt stay long cause it was hot.

So that might explain things. Brandon came over so we could go together to the Vaux (they’re emormous) show at Mercury Lounge. I had taken a Ritalin that day (it is a street drug after all… maybe Tom Cruise isn’t too crazy) and found myself cleaning my house like a little elf (kill your elf). I kept on shuffling Brando all over the place as I sorted shit out and Mr. Cleaned the surfaces. When I dragged my vacuum out of the closet I noticed it was acting weird so I turned it upside down and proceeded to attempt to fix it only to discover that a piece had been broken and unfixable. But while I tried to fix it, we ended up missing Vaux, which Karen informs me was a big miss. Bummer.

So everyone came over and we watched TV and tried out the new Blowout game that Jordan invented (which might explain why I can’t remember Monday).

Brian, Meredith, and I headed over to the Frying Pan for the Vice party that The Living Things were performing at with Har Mar Superstar. There was lots of awesome rock and a bunch of cute boys to touch and kiss, but I was in a humid daze and could hardly function. Sean Dak Attack ushered my lost body around the boat and eventually I ushered my body home.

Tuesday night I went to the “Last Days” premier and already wrote about that. It was sexy.

Wednesday night I went to see Vintz’s band Army of Me at the pier with Karen, Brandon and Josh. We danced and waited in line for autographs and got used to the smell of dying fish quickly. I bid the homies farewell and went to Brooklyn to reunite the Ex-Lovers… my DJ coupling with Miss ModernAge. I had been up til the wee hours the night before and had to wake up early that morning for a meeting at work so I found myself literally falling asleep in the DJ booth whenever I wasn’t DJing. MsMod looked gorgeous by the way. Fucking beautiful like a little Chinese angel I want to miniaturize and keep in my pocket.

We were in BK to DJ the Vicious 2nd Anniversary. Audrey and Jasper have done such an amazing job of putting on some amazing shows for the past two years, and this show was easily the best yet. Pretty much everyone is a buzz about Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, and appropriately so. Everyone is comparing them to the Talking Heads and Arcade Fire, but I also hear a bit of the Longpigs in them. There’s a dreaminess to them that will make you float to somewhere prettier than where you are now – even if it’s the prettiest place you’ve ever been or the floor of a DJ booth as you try to gain consciousness. After the show I started chatting with this guy that I thought was cute. I asked him if he liked CYHSY and he looked at me funny, then giggled sweetly and said “Well, yeah, I’m in the band.” I felt foolish but he was so sweet and totally understanding when I told him that I couldn’t see the faces… just figures… from way back where I was.

After CYHSY came the impossibly gorgeous Saints+Lovers. I wish they performed earlier in the night because by the time they came on stage everyone was exhausted, but the people that did stay and brave it out, witnessed, as always, a truly remarkable performance by the band. I will never get over their cover of Joy Division’s “Atmosphere” (out soon on stolen transmission singles!). They might not know it now, but the people who had to go home early will be kicking their own asses in a little while when they realize what they missed.

OK, now for something truly hilarious:

So about 5 years ago I had a desk job just like most people and needed a way to waste away my day. My friend Travis turned me onto the message board on his website, Buddyhead, and I became addicted because the kids on there were really funny, clever, and had great taste in music. So I got to sit around and have decent discussions about bands that I liked, movies I just saw, and other stupid shit. A lot of really cool people from all over the world posted on that message board that I later became really good friends with in real life. Some of those people went on to become rockstars, some went on to become writers, some went on to be designers, some went on to have babies. Most of us have all stayed in touch and make plans to hang out whenever we can.

One of the people who posted on that msg board said she was recording artist Amanda Ghost. This didn’t really phase many people because a lot of other musicians used to post on the board and she seemed cool and also, nobody had heard of her. But like anyone else on the board we all became invested in her because she was a regular and really sweet and funny.

Some of us got excited when her songs appeared on the new apple computers. Some of us bought her CD to show support. When she appeared on Jimmy Kimmel on Tuesday, the following day, a few of us were stoked because one of our old ‘nerd buddies had done something cool and exciting.

A couple of my friends that I know from that board were in town visiting yesterday when I got an email from someone asking me to check out the Amanda Ghost show that night at Scenic. The three of us got super excited and thought we’d surprise her at her show. So we got there early and I knocked on her dressing room door.
“Hi, is Amanda in there?”
“Yeah, who is this?”
“My friends and I are friendly with her and just wanted to say hi.”

Amanda jumped from her couch and looked at me familiarly.
“Hey! I’m Sarah Lewitinn! I know you!”
“Really? How?”
“I can’t say it outloud. Can I whisper it in your ear?”
”Why?”
“Please? I’m embarrassed!”
“OK.”
”I know you from the buddyhead message board from a few years back,” I pointed to the two boys behind me “This is XXXX and XXXX from the board!”
“Oh, hi!”
“Uh… do you remember us?”
”No, What are you talking about?”
“The buddyhead message board… you know… on the internet? We used to email and IM all the time. Your email address was Amanda@amandaghost.com.”
“Oh my god! I kid you not, but about a hundred people have come up to me saying they were email friends of mine and I had never heard of them before. I think warner brothers did some marketing thing and had people post as me on message boards. I don’t know why they did that! I didn’t even own amandaghost.com until recently, it was some super fan named xxxxxx.”
“No fucking way.”
“Yeah, seriously.”
“Oh. My. God. I feel like an idiot.”
”It’s ok! You’re not the only one who has done that!”

It’s ok. We were humiliated a little, but then we went to see Elkland at the Paper Magazine party and Baron was so inspired by their truly over the top gayformance that we hurried home with Ellen, Greg the BF, and Robbie and watched Baron hoolahoop naked in my bedroom. I wish I was kidding. He spent about 10-20 minutes stark naked in my room hoolahooping.

HAHAHAHAHAHA

i've been laughing about this every couple of minutes out of no where.
VIOLINS ARE SO HOT RIGHT NOW

Karen's been spinning Patrick Wolf's "Tristan" a lot lately, and I've been fucking loving it so much. Everytime we DJ this at least ONE person comes to us and asks about the song so I figured I'd share it with you all so you can DJ it out or put it on mix CDs/Playlists or drive around in your car while blasting it.

Download Patrick Wolf's "Tristan"

Let me know what you think and if this (posting mp3s) is something you'd like to see more of on this blog cause I'd like to do it more but I don't know if anyone wants it.

Totally unrelated, but it's been a while since I've had cute animal photos up.

I showed this photo to Nightmare of Brandon R and said "I think this is what I would look like if I were a dog." He didn't hesitate to agree. This upset me slightly, but mostly because it's true. Either way, I want a fucking muppet dog like this so badly.

FINAL-FUCKING-LY

Karen finally updated her blog.

that's all, thank you.
TELL ME WHERE DID YOU SLEEP LAST NIGHT

Last night my friend took me to the premier of Last Days, which actually turned out to be a proper premier with a red carpet and everything. Michael Pitt and Lukas Haas were there as were Thurston and Kim Gordon. All these people showed up to the movie's after party at Pianos and Michael Pitt even wore a shirt that appeared to be from the film's wardrobe. He was polite when we were introduced and looked delightfully homeless and I caught him making out with his gorgeous girlfriend outside while smoking a cigarette. He looked happy. He looked opposite of what he was in the movie. That's called acting, people.

The movie was great and only about an hour and a half long, which was LONG ENOUGH cause it was totally depressing with very little dialog. Michael Pitt played Kurt (or rather, a character based entirely on Kurt named Blake in the movie) incredibly well, but you sort of don't really get a total sense of "ok, this person is really fucking depressed and he's going to kill himself." instead, it all seems sort of premeditated on Kurt's behalf. Like, as if he was totally strung out and high, but fully aware of what he was going to do for a few days. Planning it out and not wanting to get caught and have his plan foiled. Even when Kim Gordon attempts to save Kurt, delivering a speech to him that seems like something she's been dying to tell him for the past 11 years (if she didn't when she had the shot), he's unresponsive and doesn't listen to her.

Featured in the movie was Michael Pitt’s original work, which I must say is quite impressive. I’m not sure if he was given the task of creating a song that was as Kurt-like as he could possibly get it, or if the song he painfully played towards the end of the film was something he had previously written, but either way, it was sang exactly like you would imagine Kurt to sing it. Sadness, longing, more sadness, more longing. I never wanted the song to end and I actually plan on seeing Pitt’s band Pagoda next time they play as a result.

All the shots in this movie are like gorgeous photographs lined up to create a movie, there wasn't one camera angle or set up that I didn't find totally captivating. I also really enjoyed Gus Van Sant's method of recapturing different angles of a moment in time. For instance, capturing what's going on from Kurt's point of view and then recapturing that moment almost exactly but from someone else's POV. The first time he did this I thought it would grow tiresome, but alas, the movie was short enough to prevent this.

The scene where Kurt's body is discovered by the gardener was chilling. GVS masterfully captured the image that we all remember of Kurt's body in the greenhouse. The way his shoes were positioned, the way the french doors covered parts of his body, everything. It was almost as if you were there reliving the whole thing all over again, and it made me feel slightly uncomfortable, but at the same time, I felt a sense of closure that I can't really explain. Here I was watching a movie about the last perceived days of a person's life who meant the world to me when I was a young teen, and the whole thing is still as much of an enigma as it was 11 years ago, but at least I feel like I got to see it with my own eyes, even if that’s totally not true.
